needing a pediatric neurologist recommendation

Anonymous
My 25 mo DD is yet undiagnosed, but likely ASD. EI folks are somewhat puzzled by her and suggested that mild, undetectable seizure activity may explain her developmental delays. I've never seen DD exhibiting any signs of petit mals, but I plan to have her seen by a neurologist to put a check in the box. I would appreciate any recommendations for pediatric neurologists, especially if they have experience with ASD. We live in Mo Co.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I would go to Kennedy Krieger. Alec Hoon is a great neurologist. I would avoid Children's not because their neurologists are bad -- they are not -- but because administratively, it's just so hard to schedule anything and get follow up.

Absolutely spot on with respect to Children's Hosp -- the myriad of admin BS is really a sad state of affairs.

You might also try Beth Latimer in Bethesda.

Dr. Rajasingham in Rockville. Spends an unbelievable amount of time with you at each appointment. Dr. Latimer is hard to get into and she was not all that understanding in helping with my son's migraines.

We see Dr. Zelleke at Children's Hospital. He specializes in seizures. There are issues with getting an appointment, but not as bad as some departments at Children's.

Eric Kossoff at Hopkins. HE's an epileptologist.

Dr. Rajasingham in Rockville. She is great.

Latimer is good for some diagnoses, but I don't consider her an expert in ASD at all.

Dr. Bennet Lavenstein at Children's is considered one of the best, particularly for the issues about which you are concerned, OP. Like many of these well-regarded physicians, (especially pediatric neurologists) it is not easy to get an immediate appointment with him, but, if you let the scheduling assistant know that you are willing to see him in Fairfax (Children's satellite center there) or DC you will get in faster- he seems to have more availability in Fairfax. Good Luck!

I have seen Lattimer and Dr. Pearl at CHildrens If you just want a quick EEG to rule out seizures, I would try to see Lattimer. She can set you up with an ambulatory EEG from an epilepsy center next door to her. Not worth getting on a long wait list for months to get into childrens or KK

We did not have a long wait at KKI to see a neurologist. Maybe 3 weeks. I think the long waits are for ASD evaluations.

I didn't have such a great experience with Dr. Rajasingham. I must have caught her on a bad day. Completely missed detecting hypotonia in my son.

I would only see him if your child has seizures on a daily basis. He cares little for kids who don't (like my son who has epilepsy but only gets seizures every few months) and the report states he was talking normal for a 2 year old (he was non verbal, he has autism as well)

we see Sylvia Edelstein in Cabin John and have been very happy, we get appointments within 48 hrs for both of our kids.

Would be cautious with Latimer. Mis-diagnosed my kid, put on wrong meds, and then was MIA. It was a nightmare. Had not great experience at Childrens as well. Now very happy w KK.

Op here. Thanks for the many responses to my question. I don't believe that my DC has seizures since I've never seen any behavior that resembles even the mildest seizure (would still like to consult with a neurologist about this since EI folks mentioned the possibility). For this reason, I don't feel it's necessary to see the foremost expert on seizures. Honestly, I'm more interested in just having seizures ruled out, and finding someone who can weigh in on DC's hypotonia and possible ASD. Since I first posted this, I obtained an appt with Andrea Gropman at Children's but it's rather a long wait to see her, so I would consider seeing someone else.
