I'm getting a new kitchen (years in the making). So many choices.
What recent addition do you have to your kitchen that you love and why? eg an appliance, lighting, cool storage feature |
| Besides my granite? I love my spice rack and garbage can cabinets. I really love the pull outs too. No more digging around and squinting into the dark recesses of a dusty cabinet. |
|
I love my pull out trash and recycling! Also, if you are getting an island (or peninsula - which is what we have) make sure to put an outlet or two in it. We didn't and I really, really wish we had!!
I also love my granite
|
| Which do you do first - paint the walls or install the granite countertops? |
| We did walls first. |
|
paint first
pull out trash is great. Also some cabinets for cookie sheets and stuff (they are skinny cabinets that you can line your cookie sheets up in). Outlets galore (I think code is every two feet or thee feet or something...it's pleanty but just make sure you have a lot. If you have a lot of appliances make sure you have planned for that. How exciting!!!! |

love my:
- very large, deep farm sink - faucet spray nozzle - big fridge with French doors - kitchen with lots of light |
|
love our pull-out trash with two bins: one recycling, one regular. If we were the composting types, a three-bin might be cool.
Love my mom's kitchen drawers instead of cabinets. Much easier to see and grab the pots, pans or bowls you need. Under cabinet lighting is something you don't want to forget. Lots of outlets. Make sure they are on a few different breakers so you can run the coffee maker and the toaster at the same time. Several outlets by the seating area. That is where we work on our laptops, etc. Tile backsplash is nice to have (why didn't we have this growing up?). Get more shelves than you think you will need. We have several open shelves that are great for cookbooks. Hate our pendant lights over the peninsula. They are just an awkward height. I'd prefer ones that are adjustable height, or just plain ceiling cans. Check that the cabinet hardware doesn't cause problems, such as doors not being able to open fully or obstructing a fridge or oven door. (grrr...) Consider hardware that a) won't snag your pockets when you walk by and b) are friendly to arthritic hands. I like our range. The warming drawer is actually an oven, which comes in handy for holiday meals. I wish I had a double sink. I wish the outer wall were better insulated. The butter is too cold in the winter and melts in the summer if kept by the outer wall. |
| I definitely agree with drawers. I had them in my old house and loved them and my new (current) house originally didn't have any. We ended up having to get new cabinets unexpectedly and the first thing I asked for were drawers. I have a very small kitchen but I feel like I added so much storage space. I also don't have room for a walk-in pantry (that would be the best, if you have room). But I got a large pantry cabinet with pull-out shelves. I actually got rid of a bit of counter space to add the pantry cabinet (removed a small counter next to fridge with cabinet above and below). But I gained so much storage space that I was able to bring items into the kitchen that I had previously been storing in other areas of the house. I also got a lazy susan cabinet in the corner next to the stove. Before it was just a cabinet with shelves and it was very awkwardly placed so I could hardly see what was in there. Have fun! |
| Thanks for all the advice and good ideas! We don't have a lot of room so every inch is going to count. |
| Our kitchen is not new, but one feature that I love (actually the only thing I love in this kitchen) is the instant hot water on the sink. If you drink tea it's perfect and DH uses it to make coffee in the french press. It's a little slow for filling up big pots of water, but if I want to make dd some pasta in a smaller pot I just use the hot water and it's boiling on a minute. |
One of these came with my house and recently shorted out. I loved it! I miss it. |

i've had two years to live in my new kitchen - best advice i can give you is to make a scale drawing and really think about how you are going to use the space. your work triangle, of course, but also things like dish storage in relation to dishwasher, "landing space" countertop area near stove and oven, aisle clearance for things like refrigerator door swing, dishwasher door down, etc.
love my soapstone countertops, my dish storage drawers and cookware storage drawers (do not miss upper cabinetry at all!), my central vac pan for crumb sweeping, my foot pedal for touchless prep sink faucet operation (fantastically convenient to avoid cross-contamination). i have some pictures up and more kitchen commentary on an old blog post, if it helps... http://www.chinesegrandma.com/2010/08/dream-kitchen-2/ oh, and i love my fisher & paykel double ovens - i didn't know this when i bought them, but they have extra-low temperature settings, eg 80 degrees (great for proofing yeast breads), 100 degrees (perfect for fermenting homemade yogurt), 130-140 degrees (for dehydrating foods, eg tomatoes or jerky). very very cool. good luck! |
| This may seem like a small thing but I really love it. When we bumped out our kitchen, we put a large new window above the sink. I had the contractor recess the window so I could have a deep windowsill with a granite ledge instead of a standard windowsill with a wood ledge. He thought it would look weird, but it looks great & I love having a big, deep windowsill above the sink where I can put herb pots or other things. It's just a small detail but it's really nice & I'm so glad I insisted on it! |
