OK, give me the low-down. I've never done this before, but it's time. I'm sick of worrying about it or wearing swim suits with skirts attached! I have no idea what I should look like going in though. I'm honestly not usually very well-kept down there. I trim with scissors when the hair gets long and shave my bikini line when I'm going to get in a swim suit. So how long should the hair be when I go? Should I shave it a week before so it's not super-long (it would probably be about an eighth of an inch in a week - I know, gross). Should I have the rest of it trimmed?
And, of course, the inevitable "just how much does it hurt" question? And how long will it last if you're a fairly hairy italian lady? Thanks! Where else could I ask this stuff?!! |
| I only did it once and it HURT. I learned later that it is best not to do it before or during your period, as it will hurt more then. I'm not sure if that is why it hurt so much for me or not. But I wanted to pass along the tip! |

I think it's hurts less if it's shorter, I wouldn't shave before though. It has to be a certain length.
You can also take a couple advil before you go and it will hurt less. A friend told me once that the first is always the least painful because in most cases it doesn't hurt as much as you imagine it hurts. I was lucky to find a person who is a rockstar at waxing and is barely hurts now. Just a little uncomfortable. If you have a good place, you should be able to ask questions before you go, even on the phone. They can definitely tell you how long the hair should be. Not sure how long the wax would be good for. If I go regularly, it lasts quite long, but I have really light hair. Good luck!! Choose a good place and a person that know what they're doing. |
| It hurts some, but when you're done you will be so happy and satisfied with the waxed bikini line rather than dealing with shaving, that you will quickly forget the mild pain you went through! Don't shave before you go. |
| As far as length, DO NOT SHAVE. They can trim if it's too long but usually the longer the better for the wax to "grip". DEFINITELY go to an upscale place for your first time-- you want someplace that uses quality wax and strips-- the wax makes a huge difference and a reputable place will have different kinds to address different areas/sensitivities. I recommend Bliss |
| Your other option is sugaring. If you have really sensitive skin, this might be a better option for you. I know PR@partners in does this. Just another option to consider! |
| Not OP but what about ingrown hairs? That has always kept me from trying a bikini wax... |

somewhere between and 1/8 and 1/4 inch is probably good. I try not to shave for the week before I go.
I would recommend Tylenol over Advil before going. Advil reduces swelling/inflammation and also thins your blood. Tylenol blocks your pain receptors. So Tylenol before and Advil after. Although I'm not Mediterranean, I could pass for it. A bikini wax lasts ~2 weeks before I need some sort of touch up. I'm trying to convert to occasional waxing and regular epilator use as I do not have the time to go more than every few months. If you aren't also waxing or threading your eyebrows, you might consider that while you are there. |
had no idea people trim down there. i just shave my bikini line when i'm going to wear a swimsuit. i'm in a different world. |
| no! don't shave beforehand. better to have hair that's too long - if it's too short it'll still hurt like heck but the hair won't come up. and like a PP said, before my first time i was sooooo worked up about the pain that it actually didn't hurt nearly as much as i'd imagined. now i sugar myself. i save tons of money and it lasts over 2 months. you'll love how smooth your skin feels. it's totally worth the pain imo. go for it! |

LOL, OP! I am a fairly hairy Italian lady myself, so let me give you some advice:
1. DON'T SHAVE unless you have to. The longer, the better, and they can trim if it's too long. I am ALWAYS unkempt done there unless I've been waxed, so no need to worry -- the waxer has seen it all! 2. It will hurt, but only a little. It's like a 2/10 on the pain scale (with 1/10 being a paper cut and 10/10 being labor ).
3. Don't plan to get waxed the day you need to look good. Always give skin 24 hrs to go from post-wax irritated to smooth and awesome looking! 4. It'll last about 3-4 weeks if you're a similar hairy Italian to me
5. Go somewhere nice like another PP recommended. I like PR @ Partners myself. 6. Consider getting your armpits done, too -- one hairy Italian to another, it's nice not to have a 5 o'clock shadow there when you're having fun in the sun! Good luck~! |
