Infertility Support and Discussion
We went through this process and the doctor retrieved 31 eggs and we ended up with 20 embryos (11 eggs did not take). We went through this process incidental to a cancer diagnosis so were not as focused as we probably should have been. Now we're starting to think about having a baby. How many will they usually implant at once?
I'm assuming they froze your 20 embryos? Clinics probably have different protocol as to how they would handle a frozen transfer. Not all embryos will survive the thaw process - some clinics will start with thawing one - see what the quality looks like and then decide from there what to do. It might depending on how your clinic froze them - how did they group them together - are they individually frozen or did they group two together. I would assume at most your clinic would recommend to put 2 back however single embryo transfers are much more common now - especially if the quality is great, your lining looks good, etc. We did put 3 back a couple times but that was because the third embryo wasn't great quality so we figured we'd just put it back - ended up with twins. Good luck!
Sorry - PP here - I just realized I didn't answer your first question regarding retrieval. I think you're on the high side for how many they retrieved so be very thankful! We retrieved anywhere from 6-20 in 9 IVF cycles - the most embryos we ended up with I think was 14 - the least amount was 1.
Sounds like you responded well to the IVF and have some embryos for the future. If you are dealing with chemo or radiation now I wish you or your DH a speedy recovery so you can think about transferring a couple of those embies soon.
i think the number they decide to implant will depend upon your age - the younger you are the fewer embryos they will put back... good luck!
