How dark does nursery need to be for baby to sleep?

Our nursery to be has three windows with thin shades and a lot of light. Will the baby just get used to sleeping with a lot of light or do I need to buy room-darkening shades?

I would highly recommend room darkening shades.

We had them in the nursery and recently changed rooms for my toddler. He has been up a little after 5 am all week as the sunlight has been waking him.

We moved the shades this morning as we can not take another 5 am wake up!

Update- my DS slept until 6:50 this am. Moving the room darkening shades did the trick!

I would highly recommend that you start with these.

Darkness is less important for a newborn but much more important later (as the pp suggested). I'd go ahead and get something to keep the room dark.
