Hello
I had 1hour tets done last week and the nurse called asking me to do 3-hour test, because my first test came elevated. Is here anybody who had to do both tests and the second test proved that no gestational diabetes is present? i.e. coul the first test be kind of false positive? |
I only know of this second-hand: A friend of mine had to do 2 tests for gest. diabetes, and the second one (the 3-hr one) indicated that she didn't have it. Best wishes! |
thank you for the reply, i read somewhere that the second test only confirms for every third woman, i am so praying to be not that third woman.
but in case I am that unlucky one (God forbid), how bad is this diagnisis? is that easy to manage? |
Hi. This doesn't answer your question exactly, but I just wanted to give you some encouragement. I was diagnosed with GD at 26 weeks and have been on a special diet for over a month now. I never even had the second three-hour test since my initial results were so high (200+). While it is a bit annoying to keep track of everything and pricking your finger is a little awkward at first, the diet has forced me to be really good about the kinds of food I eat (no brownies/candy, but lots of fruits, veggies and whole grains, etc.). Not having a 10-pound baby is great motivation! My weight gain, which was a bit out of control the first two trimesters, has also slowed to almost nothing (which is OK with my doctor, as long as I'm eating healthy foods). After all, it's only for a few months. And I am really going to enjoy having my first jelly beans and ice cream post partum! Good luck. |
Thank you all. I am ready to do whatever it takes to have a healthy baby. If I have to only drink water for the remaining time, i will, as long as baby is ok. I just want to make sure that it is treatable and if I succeed in maintaining the sugar levels, the baby will be ok. I just need to know that it is treatable and with appropriate diet and sugar tracking I would be able to have no affect on baby. |
Another anecdotal story for encouragement. A family member was diagnosed with GD and was able to manage it through diet alone. She had a natural (drug-free) labor at a birthing center and gave birth to a very healthy boy. It's been a few months now and they are both doing very well. Good luck to you! |
Hi-
My 1 hour test came back elevated by 4 points. My 3 hour test was well within the normal range. I was told, however, to "try" to cut back on carbs since the first test suggested that my body was having at least some issue with processing sugars. |
what it means 4 points? I had sugar level 170 with the limit 140 i think |
OP - You may find my experience reassuring as well. I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks. Keeping a diet for the next 2 months was not that bad: it forced me to eat regularly (every 3-4 hours), which is something I had never done in my life. My blood sugar was under control, and I could even have chocolate and ice-cream (if I ate them in moderate quantities). My overall weight gain was 26lbs. The baby was born without complications at 6lb 14oz. |
Thank you very much for sharing. I am wondering for those who did have the diabetes, did it go away after delivery? did you go to a special doctor to have your diet figureed out or your OB did it for you? |
As soon as I was diagnosed, I saw an endocrinologist AND a dietician. The latter was particularly helpful in figuring out what I can eat. I delivered 8 weeks ago and have a follow-up appointment with the endocrinologist next week to make sure that the problem has resolved. Since delivery, I have dropped the diet; nevertheless, my blood sugar has been back to normal, so I am hopeful that the endocrinologist will confirm that the diabetes has gone away. Btw, my ob said that it was extremely rare for the diabetes to persist after pregnancy (though there is a higher risk of getting it down the road). I hope this helps. |
I was diagnosed with Gest'l D. as well. I got tested 6 weeks after the baby was born and it has since gone away. You have to get tested at the lab (drink that sugary drink) to fully confirm whether you have it or not. But during the time I had gestational diabetes, I had to learn about portion control, stopped eating large amounts of desserts and my pregnancy weight gain had plateau'd towards the end. I gave birth to a healthy 8 lb 1 oz son. The GD was a blessing in disguise bc my husband and i have gone low carb and he's losing weight, too. So now I'm maintaining all the healthy habits I had to learn during pregnancy. |
Just a quick note - my first test was positive and my second one negative - good luck |
Just to give you some more encouragement. I was diagnosed with GD a month ago and have been doing the finger pricks, etc. It really hasn't been too much trouble, once I got over the anxiety. The plus has been that we have had an extra ultrasound to confirm that all is ok with the little one and it was wonderful. I've also learned that if I eat something out of the range of what I should (e.g. on Thanksgiving), a walk around the block or 10 minutes on the treadmill will set all back to right. |
I just read in my Mayo Clinic pregnancy book that only 15% of women who need the 2nd test are diagnosed with gest. diabetes. |
