Why is the Foxhall Community Citizens Association scared of public school children?

When is DCPS expected to make a decision on this?

A decision on what? Whether MacArthur will be a middle or high school? The decision to build Foxhall is made.

Right, the decision at Foxhall is whether it will be PK-5 or 3-5.

The 3-5 scheme would be so dumb, especially if they turn Hardy into the 9th grade satellite campus of Wilson. That means a Key student would attend FIVE campuses from PK through 12th grade (Key: PK-2, Foxhall: 3-5, MacArthur MS: 6-8, Hardy: 9, Wilson HS: 10-12)

Insane.

And if the neighbors are concerned about traffic it's the option that makes that the worst. You'd essentially have an elementary school with enrollment boundaries the size of a middle school, but the kids aren't old enough to get themselves to school.

Bowser’s new budget has $60m for Foxhall ES. What do the NIMBYs have up their sleeve now?

On-site water park? Ponies?

The ANC will be discussing a resolution on this on Wednesday evening. Bring your own popcorn.

The resolution that will be considered at the ANC3D meeting is up here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mmfynfbzbne41kq/DCPS%20New%20School%20Plans%20for%203D%20%285_31_DRAFT%29%20.docx?dl=0

It makes a lot of concessions to the NIMBYs, but yet they are still irate. Here is their call to action ahead of the meeting:

"The ANC representing Foxhall/Palisades (3D) has drafted a letter (attached) they will send to the mayor endorsing building a school at the Hardy Park site. While the letter does request that the mayor try to preserve as much park as possible, it omits the strong community opposition that has dominated every public meeting on the topic, and it assumes the city can build a very large school on a very small footprint, which defies logic.

The ANC will submit this letter as if they are representing the full community, which they are not. The letter says: "We are sending this letter to convey our support for additional public school infrastructure at these sites [GDS and Hardy]."

ANC 3D needs to hear loud opposition to this message on Wednesday evening, June 2nd. The agenda anticipates this issue will arise at 8pm. Login information is below:

Join by computer: https://zoom.us/j/3245082822
Join by Telephone: 1-301-715-8592 Meeting # 324 508 2822

DCPS's own draft drawings of potential school buildings (attached) already encroach on the soccer field (one of few in the city). A schematic with a 65,200 square foot school (Stoddert Elementary) superimposed on Hardy park is also attached.

Community residents asked the ANC to include language in the letter requesting that an architect with school expertise determine whether a 75,000 square foot school can be built without encroaching on the park. The ANC was unwilling to comply. Common sense says building a school that large without compromising the park is impossible.

Please come to this critical ANC meeting on Wednesday, June 2 (approximately 8pm, but please log in early) to register your opinion and let the ANC know this letter does not represent their constituents' opinions."

Suffice to say, please join the ANC meeting tomorrow lest it gets monopolized by these people. If you can't come, you can send feedback on the resolution here: https://www.anc3d.org/contact

Quick question on timing. Was a new Foxhall elementary on Hardy Rec site pretty much a done deal before the GDS purchase? It seemed like GDS was last minute because a for profit school backed out due to covid.

Reason I'm asking is because I thought Deal and Wilson feeder/boundary were still up in the air. Is GDS site definitely a go for high school?

Could GDS site be an interim PK-5 Foxhall Elementary with priority lottery for Key, Stoddert and diversity kids?

It wouldn't be a permanent fix, but at least it would buy some time on the immediate crowding.

I feel like I missed something, but it seems like a waste of a facility that the city bought without having a feasible Wilson feeder plan.

Sorry if I missed this in presentations or upthread.

TIA

Let me try . . . The Foxhall Community Citizens Association (FCCA) is scared of public school children. The public school serving Foxhall - as with many others in Ward 3 - is over-crowded. A solution to this problem appeared in the form of a public school building leased out to a wealthy public school until 2023. Instead of doing what the community wanted and advocating for this public school building to be given back to DCPS, the FCCA did all it could to ensure the lease was extended in virtual perpetuity. The FCCA eventually got what it wanted, but the city then announced a plan to build a new public elementary school right next to that school building. This new school building may end up taking away a bunch of land currently used for a public park. In response, the FCCA is pulling all sorts of shenanigans - including naked attempts to misrepresent community sentiment and harking back to the old NIMBY favorite on parking concerns - to stop the construction of a public school building that would help alleviate overcrowding in the Wilson feeder pattern.

Isn't DCPS buying the GDS site on Macarthur Blvd?
