A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn.
After you read that book, nothing shocks you in terms of the American government. Absolutely nothing. |
| A God who hates by Wafa Sultan. The ethos behind the book makes it a compelling read. |
| All The Light You Cannot See |
| Beloved. (Toni Morrison). No secret but it is critics’ choice for best book all the time for a reason. The audiobook read by Toni Morrison is even more intense - her voice is almost haunting but is enrapturing. Note not meant to be light and entertaining but perfect if you are looking for amazing literature. |

The 10,000 Doors of January by Alix Harrow
In the early 1900s, a young woman embarks on a fantastical journey of self-discovery after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut. In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own. The Rosie Trilogy by Graeme Simsion |
I'm surprised at the negative reaction. This book got a ton of critical acclaim. The story is woven together really well and it's beautiful to read. Someone described it as whimsical, which is not a word I would use, but I can easily see someone saying it was the best book they've read in the past 10 years. For me it's "All the Light We Cannot See." |

| Another vote for A Little Life but it sounds like it’s maybe the opposite of what OP is looking for... |
I din't love Last Mrs Parrish or The Dutch House, but I would like to know which of the books list are not "intellectual" according to pps. I don't need to have my heart torn out, witness abuses or be forced to re-think my life every time I pick up a book. Sometimes I just want a well-written diversion. |
