I am neither a Trump nor Sanders supporter. Just someone who's realistic and not in denial about the strange relationship between progressive Democrats and their much more socially conservative AA voting bloc. It doesn't matter the enlightened liberal black Democrats in DC. It's the millions of more religious, more working class, more socially conservative black Democrats who will have issues voting for a gay man, especially a white gay man. It's the same reason the Republicans would have problems with a gay Republican candidate and their evangelical base.

Politics always brings out the hypocrisies in political alliances to make the coalition work. The progressive Democratic party is still reliant on millions of homophobic voters. That you have to resort to accusing me of being a Trump or Sanders underscores the denial and only proves my point.

Your point proves absolutely nothing. Some, not all, AA may have issues with being gay but not to the maniacal level of white evangelicals. Why? Because there is the underlying reminder of oppression and prejudice, no matter how small. Btw, my black church beloved choir director is gay.

Your anecdotal experience means nothing. Even Politico had a frank article about it. AA support for gay rights lags the larger American support by a decent amount. Let's not pretend there are plenty of Democratic voters who'd have real problems voting for a gay man.

There are Democratic voters who may have problems voting for a gay man but I have never seen or read in black publications (yes, we also read Politco and other publications) the level of hatred and animosity that I have seen in white evangelicals and Republicans including, for example, the extraordinary following of Rush Limbaugh and his stance on gays. And yes, our churches grapple with the issues of biblical instruction vs homosexuality but non-discrimination is at the forefront

I am a straight, Christian African-American. I listen to my ethnic peers at church, work, barber and beauty shops, street corners. Black publications. Black radio, etc, etc. And not only do I read Politico and NYT. I tune in occasionally to Limbaugh so i can know how you think.

And I will bet the farm that many socially conservative blacks (and this is not the small group Blacks for Trump) will think LONG and hard before casting their votes for anyone like Trump. Or Sanders. Or Biden. Or Buttigieg. I will not be defined by you. What a joke. Later for you.

You can be angry however you want. But it still doesn't explain away the simple reality of the polls showing AA support for gay rights is much lower than white support or Democratic support. Much of it is likely due to religion and the working class backgrounds (working class people tend to be much more socially conservative). Go ahead and be angry, but there's definitely a major problem among a substantial portion of the AAs in voting for a gay white man. The whole Politico article was about it, including frank statement from AA LGBTA leaders about it. It's not about what you think, or what your church is like, or clutching your pearls at being pigeon-holed, but the broader AA voting bloc. That is what matters. The Democrats claim to be the party of progressives, but they are also heavily dependent on AA and Latino voters, and those two blocs are more conservative when it comes to gay rights and supporting gay candidates.

There are ways he could have defended his thinking at the time without being so blatantly ignorant to the negative impacts of his policies.

He is apologizing because he is expected to; nobody can admit that certain minorities are “overrepresented” because of the crime statistics.
While profiling is a bad thing, it would be more effective if the representatives of minority communities worked with their own communities on decreasing participation in criminal activity and on being productive citizens.
