In NYC, the train has left the station and many children are prepped for the WPPSI (called ERB in NYC) in their preschools, by tutors, child psychologists, or by buying Aristotle Circle's workbook (not the real test, but very close to it). In addition, NYC has easy test administrators and more difficult ones. It is very hard to resist prepping since you know your child is competing with others who have been prepped. I agree that the test is only one part of the application, but many admission people say that there are often cut-off scores (just like the SATs) and it becomes much more difficult for a child to get in if they fall below a cutoff score (although not impossible).
