Even if you had received the very top scholarship, it's not full-ride - only one year of dorm and meal plans is included. The next three years are on you. UVA in-state is worth the cost vs. any scholarship at U. of Alabama. https://scholarships.ua.edu/types/in-state.php

Yes, it’s always better to be top dog, at, say Kansas State or Florida Atlantic than it is to be be another generic graduate of an “elite” place.

They are better for grad school admission, but not for elite employment right out of school.

Naviance at our school is completely off. Public school decent size with large % going to college. UMCP has you in about 1250 and 3.5 WGPA. Counselor suggested that since it relies on self reported it skews favorable.

The list he put together is HYPSM,Caltech,Georgetown, Berkeley,UVA,CMU,UMCP,TA&M.
He really likes MIT,Caltech,Yale but it looks very difficult to get in...

Unless he has an unweighted 3.9-4.0 and 1500+ On the SAT, this list is way too heavy on the elite schools. The first several you listed are essentially a lottery for top students.

SAT 1480, ACT 34, GPA 4.00 and 4.6 w, NHS,honors and 6 APs

UMCP and Texas yes. I wouldn't consider the other three "safeties".

Texas A&M is not as difficult as UT-Austin, but Texas law limits the state universities to 10% out of state students. That includes international students and sports recruits. Particularly for engineering, it is not an easy admit.
