What's the first 'dirty' thing you notice in someone else's house?

We have cats but I can't stand the bad smell of most cat homes so am super careful to keep our home's pet odors neutral and we air our place out daily.

I like the smell of air fresheners and perfume. Fresh air is nice too. But when the house is all closed up it's nice to have a nice scent wafting in the house. I am really surprised by how many people can't tolerate any sort of scent. Do you use scent free detergent for your clothes and scent free hand soap? I don't.

Yes, I use unscented products and hate the artificial smell of chemical air fresheners. It gives me headaches.

I do like the smell of fresh flowers. Don't mind cinnamon and cloves boiling on the stove or fresh baked cookies. But those fake air fresheners it scented candles are gross to me, and generally are doing a poor job masking a bad smell.

I enjoy fresh flowers because they smell nice to me. And I enjoy scented candles and some air freshers for the same reason. It's not meant to mask a bad smell any more than you bake cookies to mask a bad smell, I just use them because I like them.

It starts with the clutter. We have friends that live in a 4000 sq foot house, yet there is CRAP everywhere. Every corner, table, open spot, all over the kitchen counters. I couldn't function in that mess. Then it's the dirty walls that catch my eye.

I look at walls, baseboards, kitchen cabinets, fridges. I see it ALL... I love my friends and I let their messiness go. It doesn't bother me. Now my MIL's fridge always bothers me. I don't know why it seems so messy and gross but it just does.

I notice clutter and floors/baseboards first. I don't know why but especially bathroom floors, I guess because I'm just sitting there with nothing else to look at.
My house is pretty clean. Good reminder on the outside/front entry though. I should get better at that. We've had a hell-ish year though so I think our friends would give us a pass. I need to take out old mums still.

The fucking baseboards and walls, really??

I have boys and I work full-time. I also have a weekly house cleaner.

But if you are nit-picking that much: blow me. Please never come to my house.

Everything I own is also scent free. No perfumes, unscented soaps and detergents, no candles, etc. I even use unscented antiperspirant. I'm allergic to most of the scents as they make me itch or feel sick.

Pet Hair, nasty toilets, crazy trash with no recycle sorting (filled up to brim, seeping out, smelly), Smelly House

Shoes piled by the door guests enter through, dishes piled in the sink, dining table covered in randomness, scummy bathroom sinks and dirty toilets, smelly garbage cans, and I always notice when people have banged up/scuffed up walls and don't touch them up.

Did you miss the part where I said that I don't let it bother me. I can't help but see it, I own a restaurant! I can't go anywhere without noticing how inadequately an area has been cleaned. It's a fucking curse (but a blessing at work).

We keep shoes (neatly) stored at the door so judgemental visitors, like the ones rampant on this thread, will subtly know to remove their filthy shoes w/o being explicitly told to do so. I'd hate to be judged for filthy floors muddied by guest shoes. Oh right, but then I'll be judged for keeping a shoeless home. We Can't win folks, so Just do you.

Smells-I seem to have a heightened sense of smell. I dislike dog/pet smells as much as I also dislike the fabreeze/scented candle/air freshened homes. Some homes also have a background of mold/dampness. Also- my sister has a spotless home but there is a fog of laundry/fabric softner smell - that follows her where ever she goes too and I notice this is a thing for some people. I also am grossed out by pee sprinkled toilet seats and refrigerators crammed with leftovers and rotting food (my in-laws.) And I also notice friends who entertain/serve food in kitchens they also let their cats climb all over counters/table. Totally grosses me out. I know how busy we all are so most clutter just doesn't bother me even though I try to be relentless myself at home

You need to be the one to do all the hosting then.
