I think part of it is that D.C.'ers are so very, very willing to kick a person when they are down. It seems their favorite past time. If that is not miserable behavior, I don't know what is. They have no idea that manners includes how you treat people, or living by the golden rule. So OP, I can see where you are coming from. It is such a small concept to grasp, and costs nothing, yet they refuse.

Are you serious?? What a sweeping statement. I know so many people here that would give me the shirt of their back. I personally go out of my way to help people whenever I can and do a lot of community service work. I know plenty of people who do the same. Everyone from DC refuses to bide by the Golden Rule? Please. By your statement you are actually the kind of person I would like to avoid in this city.

You must never ride the metro! I have never seen so many people pretend the elderly/infirm/pregnant are invisible as the folks sitting in the priority seats. It does indeed seem like they have never heard of the golden rule!

P.S. First PP, I completely agree. I love that the PP who responded to you did so in a very jerky way. Looks like she only believes in the golden rule sometimes, but not, you know, when responding to others online or anything.

I spent a bunch of years in the midwest, and I can tell ya. There are some pretty awful people there, too. Look for the clouds and you will never notice the silver lining.

I am glad I don't live in the midwest anymore. This is home, and I like it here. My house is plenty big enough for me, and I just don't hang out with people I don't like.

I have to say I agree with a lot of the points on both sides of the argument. Wouldn't it be nice if we could have the best of both worlds?

DC weather
Midwestern friendliness
DC intellectualism

Midwestern unpretentiousness
DC diversity
Midwestern cost of living
DC (OK, make that NoVA/MoCo) schools
Midwestern traffic
DC cultural opportunities
Midwestern work/life balance

Does such an animal even exist? Unfortunately, I don't think it does.

Every year I go home to the Midwest at Christmas and realize how much I miss the friendliness and that smaller town vibe. Then, after a week or so, I realize I don't really fit in with the people there anymore. It's sad when you can no longer feel truly at home in either place because each has spoiled you for the other.

Move to Fairfax (Fairfax Corner/Fair Lakes area). Unbelievably friendly people in my neighborhood.

Also, any given day (truly) you will see: families of foxes, TONS of hawks, bats, woodpeckers, owls, turtles of every variety, the occasional bear, squirrels, chipmunks, too many deer to count, hummingbirds, the occasional coyote, etc. etc.

I work in DC. Commute stinks but I LOVE living here. Could NOT pay me enough to move back to the Midwest.

Brilliant response. Deflect through name-calling. I don't expect anything less from you.

Are you kidding? Saying someone is making a sweeping statement is jerky??? Hmmmm interesting.

Omg, hilarious! Are you for real? The PP said absolutely nothing "jerky". Simply stating that to say EVERYONE in this area is rude and horrible is a ridiculous statement! You are a bit dramatic aren't you. Obviously the Metro has rubbed off on you because you are unecessarily nasty.

Pretty jerky, I think. (So are you, btw, classy!)

You are one of the people I want to move from this area. Completely bitchy and oddly attacking PP's for nothing. Your posts are a lot more telling about yourself.

Who's the classy one? The one slingy mud for no reason or the PP who is being pretty reasonable

Actuall cally you nasty was pretty classy. I think the PP could very easily have called you something more profane.

I hate DC people with a passion but I LOVE DC AREA. Lots of opportunities, diversity, awesome food... but people around here just suck!

BTW, miracle in the metro today. As I enter the last car with my huge stroller all 4 people sitting in the special needs seat stood up and offered me their seats. I was in awe and could not take their seats. I thanked them out loud!

Ok - I didn't even read this thread, but only the subject line. I moved away from DC 6 months ago and now live in Hawaii!!! If you can escape, go for it!!!

1:16 - a rarity in this area - so nice to hear! Thank you for sharing something nice that happens here instead of attacking the messenger. You realize it is not "all about you". How wise of you. Not so for so many others!

Hyattsville Hills. (not the PP, by the way, but she seems to be describing this exact community. Plus cheap houses!).

Yes - that's the neighborhood we're in ...(I'm 20:14)

Sounds like a great community. What is the education level of most of the neighbors?
