Why isn’t everyone moving to the Main Line?

Anonymous
Weird thread. Most of us have jobs? So we can't just move somewhere random where our money goes further. The money goes further because the jobs aren't there. It's like asking "Why doesn't everyone move to this one nice area of Ohio?"

People I know who have done it barely lasted two years out of sheer boredom.

This is so true. It does not matter the education, social class, how much money they have or don’t—in Philly area the default setting for interpersonal interactions is “me vs. everybody” or “everybody vs. me.”

Philly people are so quick to fight strangers over nothing.

I have found that to be the case much more in MA.

A lot of Bucks County is very blue collar, MAGA territory. Is that what you meant?

Media has a nice center but otherwise is fairly ordinary.

West Chester is a bit far for easy commuting.

Swarthmore has ridiculous property taxes.

Private schools aplenty on the Main Line.

People live on the Main Line because it has one of the best commutes to Center City, reasonable proximity to King of Prussia and the burgeoning tech and pharma industries in Chester County while having excellent public and private schools and leafy settings and handsome housing and more reasonable taxes. It really is not that difficult to understand why people would chose the Main Line over most of the other suburbs. And affluent areas inside Philadelphia or in other suburbs are no more or less "real" than the Main Line.

Which parts are MAGA? The areas we visit to see family aren’t MAGA/blue collar at all.

Not pp but there have been book bans proposed in Central Bucks & Pennridge school districts (both in Bucks County). The school board was all MAGAs at one point. These are “good” schools.

We’re talking about Main Line not Bucks County. ML meaning Bryn Mawr, Penn Valley, Ardmore, Gladwyne, Haverford.

“A lot of Bucks County is very blue collar, MAGA territory. Is that what you meant?” is the comment of pp’s that I was referring to.

Part of the weirdness of some of the responses is that it didn't make sense, as if written by someone who didn't know Philadelphia at all. Take Bucks County. It has gorgeous rolling countryside with the famous stone farmhouses, but the people who buy into that lifestyle aren't the people thinking they're too good for the Main Line. If anything, they're the Lily Pulitzer siblings/friends of the same with the big old stone houses on the Main Line or former residents who wanted a more pastoral environment. And mentioning Media makes no sense. The more expensive parts of Media and West Chester are all resolutely suburban McMansions. You're even more white bread and a lot further away from Philadelphia.

NP. I used to live in Philly and would spend a lot of time taking long walks in and near the city. Used to walk from the Ardmore SEPTA stop to Rosemont College & back. Pretty area.

That is very funny to me as someone who has been living here for 10+ years. I don’t think my life in Moco, MD was inherently more exciting than my life in Montgomery County, PA, but I am easily amused.
