PREPARATION FOR NEWLY ACCEPTED 3RD GRADE AAP STUDENTS

Anonymous
I'm one of the proud parents whose child got accepted into the AAP program for 3rd grade center. I was thinking this summer I should be keeping him up to speed on math (at the least) to ensure he is not behind. Does anyone know of any summer programs that may be helpful? Any feedback or experiences are appreciated. Thanks in advance

I've heard it is good for them to know their multiplication tables before they start 3rd if they are in the gifted program.

at orientation yesterday, we were told they should have multiplication and division tables memorized before school starts next september as well. aart suggested flash cards.

Our school gave us a copy of the 3rd grade math book to use over the summer. My child and I went through the whole thing mosly during the second half of the summer. She didn't "get" it all but I think it was a good introduction. They do go over the stuff at the beginning of the school year.

Just a thought -- if you have to do so much preparation over the summer maybe your child does not belong in AAP.

Whew. We're already into multiplication and division....on dd's request earlier this year. However, she doesn't know them cold.

Ironically, a big help was the old "School House Rock" videos from when I was a kid. DD loves them...especially the "Figure Eight" song.

No one said anything about "SO much preparation" There is nothing wrong with practice over summer to get kids ready and up to speed for the school year. We do that every summer. Thanks for your feedback, but between myself, the school, and the committee, we know what's best for my child.

Thanks for helpful suggestions Looking forward to orientation next week.

Any feedback of experiences with 3rd grade AAP?

I have a friend whose dd is now in 3rd grade AAP. She tells me that the homework level is normal and her dd liked the pace of things. Her dd didn't know anyone in her class, but found a friend in the first few weeks.

Yes, I have heard the same thing about homework. Our principal says the homework guideline remains for AAP. However, I do know that some schools (Hunter Woods in particular) has hours of work everyday.

At Louise Archer, it averages about 1/2 hr per night, plus 1/2 hr reading. Some nights there is a lot more, some there is not much. Usually there is no homework over evenings or weekends. This does not include the "big" projects.

As for preparation, we tried to work on the multiplication tables, but my DD refused. It has not really been a big deal (she is getting g's in math, o's in everything else)

At Greenbriar West they have the same amount of homework (30 minutes per night) as the rest of the school. I have friends who's kids are in their AAP program, and they tell me that the homework load has been the same as before and "no big deal".

We're doing our own thing-working in the 3rd and 4th grade workbooks and following dd's lead on what she wants to learn.

But most importantly...DD is going to have fun playing with her friends and hanging out at the pool. It's important that she gets her "down" time too.

At Canterbury Woods, the homework load is the same as the rest of the school. The school has a pizza party and picnic at the beginning of school so everyone starting AAP together gets to know each other.

A little touchy -- maybe you don not really believe your DC' belongs

No worries - 3rd grade AAP math starts at the same level as other 3rd grade math classes in FCPS. If your child needs a summer math boost would depend on his/her performance this year, not on what is to come.
