Look into some of the certification programs - some of the more well known ones are ACE, ACSM, NASM. I believe ACSM is one of the most rigorous and well-respected.
You basically will need to pay some money up front for the training materials and to take the test. It is usually self-study, then you go and spend a weekend getting tested (depending on the program, you may not need to devote a whole weekend). You will need to get re-certified every 1-2 years usually. The first step is getting CPR certified, which you can do through Red Cross, American Heart, or probably your local hospital.
