Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
Since moving to DC, we have been very underwhelmed with the Chinese food we've had. Can anyone recommend a fantastic Chinese place within about a 45-minute (max) drive of Friendship Heights? We have to satisfy our jones already! TIA!!!!

Up in Rockville, in the unassuming strip mall beauty of 1970s rockville, are at least two places where no one speaks English. the chinese clientele don't use menus, they just discuss with the waiters what's good that day.
My State Dept.-Asia friends go there, and I can't remember the names, but someone will chime in here. |
| -- Oh, and if you've moved here from California, you're not ever going to match the cuisine you've left. It's not possible, IME, due to the differing taste of the vegetables |
| She's probably referring to Joe's Noodle House. Meh. We prefer Spring Garden on 16th Street in Silver Spring. Go the back way via Military Road. |

Joe's Noodle House in Rockville is excellent. Also in Rockville, A&Js and Szechuan Pavillion.
The place in the mall in wheaton is also surprisingly good. |
| Oriental east in silver spring |
| There are great dumplings at China Bistro in Rockville too. |
| yes! that was it. China Bistro. (:07 here). My chinese american friends who work for the state dept. and travel to asia all the time like China Bistro. |
| Yuan Fu in Rockville is also good for vegetarian Chinese. |
| Full Key in Wheaton. |
| Joe's Noodle House - hands down. |

Joe's noodle house is overrated.
I like A&J (Rockville and Annandale), Full Key (in Baileys Crossroads VA), Michael's noodles in Rockville |

I'm from Queens and spoiled by the Chinese options in Flushing, so we spend a lot of time venturing out into MD and VA in search of good Chinese food. We used to like Bob's Noodle 66 in Rockville for Taiwanese food, but I've heard it has gone downhill in quality. Joe's Noodle house has the best fried dumplings around, but overall I think it is overrated.
I think Hong Kong Palace has by far the best food. It's in Falls Church, behind the Home Depot, on the part of the mall with Dogfish Ale house and Michael's. (Address is 6387 Seven Corners Center, Falls Church, VA 22044-2402). It is NOT Fortune, which is visible from Home Depot itself. Try the spring mountain dumplings in spicy sauce, the cumin lamb, the chicken and potatoes fried dish, ma po tofu and the dan dan noodles. Outstanding! As good as the best food we could find in Flushing. It is small and gets crowded so we go early with our kids. They are pretty adventurous eaters but don't love spicy food, so they get the chicken & corn soup, fried dumplings, and yang shou fried rice, and sauteed snow pea shoots. To get there quickly from Friendship Heights, suggest you take the Chain Bridge, Glebe Road to Williamsburg/Sycamore, left on Wilson, right on Patrick Henry, cross Route 50, then make a right to get into the mall. (Can you tell me make this trip often?) We sometime justify the trip with a stop at the Target on Route 50. If the wait at Hong Kong Palace is too long, Mark's Duck House is nearby, in the Williston Center on Route 50. My husband and kids love the Peking duck. I like the wontons in hot chili oil. They do greens well (esp baby bok choy). They serve dim sum every day for lunch. Good luck and post if you find more good places! |
| Meiwah in Dupont. The one in Chevy Chase is ok, works if you want delivery. |

There is a Chinese seafood place in Falls Church on Rt 50 (by Graham Rd) - blanking on name though. |
