Private & Independent Schools
| Is there one? Should there be? What topics would be addressed? |
| No--the attraction of independent schools is that schools can make the best decisions for their studetns without having big brother over their head. Unions have ruined schools as they make best decisions for teachers regardless of student needs. |
I'm a parent and I completely disagree that unions have ruined schools. I have always supported and felt the need for public school teachers to have unions to protect their interests, but just recently I have decided that those who teach in independent schools would serve themselves well by organizing, too. |
| The point of independent schools is they are independent. Each has its own leadership and board of directors. |
| I was a private school teacher many years ago, and I remember an effort to unionize us, so I think there must be a union, or at least there used to be. The only way it appeared relevant to me was that we might have gotten better insurance out of it. I think nothing ever came of it at my school. |

Many teachers are members of TIAA-CREF but I think that's more for retirement savings than anything else.
Also, as the child of two independent school teachers, I can most assuredly tell you that independent school teachers make WAY less than their public school counterparts. |
| Teacher here. Yes!! There are some independent schools that belong to a union. None of the DC independent schools are part of a union. The unions address pretty much the same issues as public school teachers union. One of my friends teaches at the Francis Parker School (in Chicago) and the teachers there are part of union. She was very pleased to see a teacher pay scale that was based on teacher experience (years) and degree(s) earned. |
| TIAA-CREF is not a union. |
