How do you stay motivated/concentrate at work?

How do you feel about working in an office all day (for those that do)? Don't you feel like life is passing by while you are stuck behind a desk staring at a computer all day doing
meaningless work? That's how I feel sometimes and that's how I've been feeling a lot lately. How do you stay motivated and how do you concentrate on churning out the routine tasks?
Even those in high positions are spending their days doing meaningless paperwork in the bigger scheme of life, I'm not just referring to admin positions. How do you stop yourself from
being distracted and daydreaming? I know all the GTD (get things done) type of "tricks" and they are good - and they do work when you're in the right mindset and in a career-driven mood.
I've been there - but as I get older I just can't help but feel like....well I'm just getting older and spend my time behind a desk...how sad really! Is it the money that's enough to motivate you?

Quota. You get fired if you don't make your quota.

On beautiful dreamy Spring days I think you'd have to be a total tool not to have your mind wander quite a bit. But yeah, quotas and quarterly reviews. And proper medication!

Soma is good. Soma is all we need.

What kind of medication works for you?

I have never heard of this. I looked it up, sounds like an intense drug!

I would have been fired a long time ago.

I couldn't stop daydreaming, so I changed my career.

My co-workers are all earnestly applying themselves and hard at work while I just try to appear busy much of the time because I hate working. I wish I had their work ethic. Some of them are like the energizer bunny.

Human beings were not designed to sit behind a desk all day staring at a glowing screen. Hell, most people even eat at their desks these days to avoid taking a lunch break. It's really sad. Then we go home and watch other glowing screens of various shapes and sizes. It's depressing.

Do something that matters where you're not just doing paperwork for starters. I'm not being flip, I'm being serious. As Chris Rock says, someone us have jobs, some of us have careers, ad I'm very incredibly lucky to have a career.

It's a quote from Brave New World. But I digress. Wellbutrin and a whiff of Adderall works for me.

You need a new job. My job is meaningful, I have authority to make decisions, and, most of the time, I do believe that what I'm doing really matters. It's also very intense, so most days I have a hard time just keeping my head above water and just don't have time to be bored. I feel like I arrive at work and then the next time I look at the clock it's 6:00 p.m. It's one reason I really love my job. I am very deadline oriented, and I would be capable of sitting around doing nothing, if I wasn't constantly under the gun. The job I've most hated in my life was like that. I could make more money in a more boring job, but I stay at my job because I've never not wanted to go to work in the morning.
