Does anyone do them anymore? I did with my first, and I honestly think they caused more anxiety than they were worth. I did them twice a day and aimed for 10 kicks in an hour (kicks or some kind of movement). What do you all do?
Also, when (i.e., at what gestational age) can you start them? I'm at 21 weeks and I am thinking it's probably too early... Thanks! |
I've read that you should start doing them at 28 weeks. However, I'm 33 weeks and haven't been doing them. This baby moves frequently after dinner and all through the night, so I feel pretty reassured that everything is ok. If I went a day without feeling movement, then I would be concerned. |
I also found they created FAR more anxiety than anything else. I did not do them after the first few efforts. I just kept tabs on the overall picture of movement. My db was very active in utero, so I didn't have periods of worry. |
My OB gave me a kick-count sheet that said if I can feel 10 movements by noon not to worry about it for the rest of the day. (If you don't, then proceed to the actual counting several times a day.) It's a really easy way to do it and reassuring. There have been very few days where I haven't felt 10 movements by noon. |
PP - How many weeks are you? I am 26 weeks and often do not feel any movement until much later in the day. |
For what it's worth, my OB told me not to do counts within an hour period because the baby tends to have periods of wake and sleep and those cycles can be 1-2 hours long so if you are measuring during naptime you will definitely get off readings. |
I wasn't told to do them with my 1st and found them annoying and stressful when told to do them with my 2nd! Since it was my second pregnancy, I had confidence that all was going well, so I only did them occasionally and didn't worry too much if the numbers didn't add up. |
I did not do them. I just make sure I kept feeling the baby move. |

I'm 34 weeks, but didn't start doing these until I was 30 weeks. |
