Special ed schools in MOCO

Anonymous
Moving to MOCO, we are looking for a home to rent. Which areas are good for special ed schools (Pre-K)?

Are you looking for private or public? There are a number of private schools in Potomac and Rockville some of which have pre-k.

There are pre-k programs all over the county for special needs students. (public school).

There is the private LEAP program at University of Maryland in College Park.

PP here, here are locations of PEP programs in the county, there are other programs, but you get an idea of where some of the programs are offered.

If you are looking at private there is Maddux and Katherine Thomas but they may be full for the fall.

Thank you 9.11. http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/pep/locations.shtm list all the locations. How do we judge the good ones?

You will be assigned to PEP based on whether and what level your child qualifies and based on YOUR location. You really can't pick and choose the location. And I've never seen a bad PEP classroom.

Thank You. You mentioned they will pick PEP location based on where we reside. We now have an option to choose the location for renting and I am wondering what would be the best location to rent in MOCO from this point of view?

You might want to research schools in the area, and choose a school where you'd want to send your child should he/she be mainstreamed (which could happen for K) Are you sure he/she qualifies for PEP?

There are several different PEPs as a PP mentioned, OP. So even if you live in one school district that has a PEP, if it's not the right PEP for your child then your child will be sent to another school. For example, we lived in Chevy Chase (rental) and then bought in Bethesda midway through last year, but DC was bussed the whole time to a PEP class in Silver Spring because that was the site of the nearest PEP Collab class.

My child would have gone to Stephen Knolls in Kensington. The school is dark and is a school for only special needs kids. I'm not saying that it is a bad classroom, but it is a school where my special needs child would have no opportunity to interact with typical peers. Most schools have opportunities for children to interact with typical children who are in head start. So if you want interaction with typical schools ask about whether there is a head start in the school and if there are any activities which the children get together for. I think another parent may be able to add to (or correct) this. My child ended up in a SN class which is not PEP.

It is scarY to hear about Stephen Knolls. I would not want to send my child over there. I am hoping to find a school that has inclusion program
