Would you continue dc into 2nd grade?

Anonymous
1st grade for dd (SID, mild/moderate ADD, no learning concerns) is mainstreamed in local public. Class this yr has 24 dc, and dd has hard time when everyone is in motion in the small room, but manages. The word is that 2nd grade classes will be hovering around 26-28. Would you chance it and send dd, or try to find $ for a private school? Because it would hurt us financially (just bought a house last yr) leaning toward Catholic. Some Catholics of course have same #, but we're looking at the smaller ones.

Depends, what district are you? (MoCo, FFX, DC, etc.)

One other factor to consider. How good are the teachers at classroom control? I would go sit in the potential classes and watch how the teacher keeps children under focus. Some teachers are just better for these kids than others. My daughter had a 3rd grade teacher that knew how to use voice (not yelling, but tone) the kids knew in fact it was not a good thing if she was getting quieter. She also was able to help kids like my daughter with very small touches to the shoulder to signal a need to refocus.

I f you can swing it and you find a school that is suitable to all your needs I would switch. Unfort, the schools in this area are under a huge budget crunch and the classrooms are really being effected next year. There are bigger numbers and less resources for schools.

Does your DD have an IEP?

try to get her a 1:1 aide - make the request in your next IEP meeting

Data on 1:1 aides is VERY mixed! Oftentimes, other people completely cease interaction with the student and only interact "through" the aide. Sometimes teachers even provide less differentiated instruction, they assume the aide is handling everything. Furthermore, para-professionals are not highly-skilled positions. I would be very wary of this as a solution.
