My 1 year old has one scheduled in about a week for her big head and non-closing fontanelle.
Is the sedation procedure similar to when she got tubes? |
| yes, likely it is ... I have never had a one year old sedated but have had older children and the drill has been the same -- best wishes |

My child has had 3 sedated MRIs and will undergo a fourth next week. Two at Childrens and two at Hopkins. The first at 16 months.
The procedure has always been nothing to eat after midnight and nothing to drink after approximately 5 a.m. (You will usually be given one of the first appointments of the day with an infant). You will be asked to arrive a couple of hours early, and you will meet with a nurse and then with the anesthesiologist. You will be asked a bunch of questions about medications, allergies, etc. When it is almost time they will take the baby (and you) to a room where a mask is placed over the baby's face and the baby goes to sleep. The baby may cry because of the smell or just having the mask on the face. You can kiss the baby and they give you a beeper. You can wait in the waiting area or go get coffee. They will tell you approximately how long it should take. They usually beep you as soon as your child is in recovery and he probably won't be awake yet. You sit next to the gurney and wait for him to awaken. He may have an IV in. When the child is fully awake and has been able to drink some juice or other liquid, they will release you. |

Thanks, everyone. DH handled the sedation for the tubes, but it sounds like the same procedure. DD is 14 mos now and we're going to inova Hospital for Children.

Good luck OP.
FYI, if you haven't been there for the sedation procedure before, it can be a little disturbing. Just so know in advance (and aren't completely freaked out), you'll get to hold your child while they do the sedation, but as soon as it hits your child will go VERY limp. If you don't know to expect it, that can be a really scary sensation for a parent. |
