If DC got rid of it's life long entitlements and bloated city government they could cut taxes by 50%

But rather Vince Gray and his cronies have another union supported pork laden budget that will fleece the tax payers of DC. They can't even keep 4000 officers with this massive budget. We have the worst form of legalized wealth transfer no robbery in the 3 jurisdictions. By 2014 we will see changes.

If you don' like it, you have options. But wealthy people keep moving into the district. The free market has spoken. Whatever problems DC has, it is attractive to people with means.

No amount of facts can challenge the power of Perception.

How much more, really, do DC residents pay in tax than a resident of Arlington (remember folks, to compare DC taxes you must compare DC taxes with Arlington + Virginia taxes.)

I assume you know the answer: (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/rawfisher/2008/01/who_pays_more_taxes_virginia_m.html)
A new comparison of the tax burdens in the D.C. area reveals that the stereotype of tax-loving District bureaucrats hoovering up residents' riches is true for the lowest income level--the $25,000 a year family indeed faces a greater burden in Washington than in suburban Maryland or Virginia.

But at the $50,000 income level, the District turns out to have the lowest tax burden of the three jurisdictions, and for the next three higher income brackets--families earning $75,000, $100,000 or $150,000 a year--the District lands pretty much in the middle, ranking third among six area jurisdictions.
So, rather than coddling the poor, DC taxes them, and is not at all bad for the middle class. As PP implied, most of us believe what we want rather than what is.

that study was absurd, and way off the mark. To pay that much in car taxes, you would have to have a $40K car each every year. If you buy a normal car and keep it for 5-6 years, then the car taxes are a fraction of what shown in that study, and Virginia has by far the lowest taxes.

Your perception is indeed your reality. No amount of facts and stats can dissuade you from your distortion of that, um, reality.

No it doesn't. You read the table wrong. It assumes one of the two cars is a 15,000 car, and the other is a 40,000 car. In Arlington, the average family around me is driving one nice sedan and one nice minivan. Does that add up to 55,000 of car value? Heck, yes it does.

How do you get 50%, OP?

and you get that car replaced each year? of course not. cars depreciate quickly. we have a 2005 bmw and 2005 saab, and our car tax bill is about $400 ...

Well that's because both of your cars are six years old and you get a lot of the tax reduced by the car tax relief program. But if you had a new car the tax on that car would be high for the first three years or so, because the car tax relief applies only to the first 20,000 of value.

OP here. I forgot to add if the city would actually COLLECT the taxes and fees owed. But instead you have people like Harriet Waters stealing hundreds of millions from under our noses and no one noticed. This city has practically help to fund the middle class of PG County when you factor in all the local government jobs. Today I saw the meter maid fast asleep in her Civic in my neighborhood.

It's the rant that came up when he shook the "Conservative Rant Edition Magic 8-ball".

And they should exercise those options. Why do they want to throw money into the money pit? Maybe they hope to rule it. As always, they eventually will.

Ahh yess. And you go back to the typical liberal playbook. Don't acknowledge the other side's argument but rather try and ridicule them. You act like DC doesn't spend hundreds of millions of dollars on welfare, life long welfare for most (even Marion Barry admits it) and this is starting to take a toll. Rather you make fun of me because if you agreed then you would have to actually do something about the problem.
