It's not my fault you screwed up...

Anonymous
Coworker made a significant mistake that persisted over 15 month period (could have been discovered by coworker every single day during that time). Spends nearly two weeks trying to come up with a fix to this problem, which coworker doesn't even fully understand, except that coworker knows it's bad. I am internal legal and this issue comes to my attention courtesy of someone other than coworker. I tell coworker "hey, I know you were trying to be proactive here, but it's really important to loop in legal ASAP on stuff like this, so please be sure to do so." Coworker is FURIOUS with me. Huh? Because somehow it's my fault that this happened?!? Argh.

It's a riot that you're in legal and venting on DCUM on a potentially large client issue. Hilarious.

Glad this was good for a laugh. I try.

WTF? It's an anonymous forum, and the OP didn't like, say the coworker's name or the situation or anything. If you think that's "a riot," I don't think you understand humor...

It drives me crazy when people can't take responsibility for their own actions. I'm a nanny who works for a mom like this. Everything is my fault, and especially when she tells me one thing one day and something else the next. I'm supposed to be a mind reader I guess. My last day is Friday due to our communication issue. She's going to have communication issues with the IRS and department of labor when I file for unemployment and she hasn't been withholding like she said she would.

Anyway OP....the world is full of people who blame everything on everything else. By and large the people who do the most complaining are the ones who have the least to complain about.

Shocker, she is touchy and defensive about screwing up. What's new?

There was absolutely nothing in the OP that could even come close to a breach of confidentiality if that's what you're implying. And no, I am not the OP.

OP, as another person "in legal," I find that people love to shoot the messenger. They don't seem to feel that we have a right to perform our job function of keeping the company/firm/agency safe when we point out obvious legal lapses. How dare we convey this news?

I hope you changed enough of this story to cover your rump when coworker reads this and has you fired! I'm "internal HR," and this would be a breach in my office.

Also not OP but... really? This story is extremely vague.

Lay off. OP did nothing wrong and you know it. The guilty are those who blame others and time after time fail to take responsibility. As PP's IRS example, it will bite the denier in the ass. Boy, I wish I was there to see that one. It really does seem like psychotic behavior. Funny, but sad at the same time.

And, how, exactly, will her co-worker prove it's her? You must not be very good at your job if you think OP can get fired over this.

I'm in Legal too and I always joke to the Board/Director/Staff that everyone hates the Legal Department but it's my job. Then I deliver the news/reprimand/lecture/whatever.

People hate being told what they can't do, or that they made mistakes. It's natural, heck I hate it too. It's not personal. Document, document, document.

Yep, this is the answer.

She could be posting from a home computer or personal phone though, in which case HR would never know.

Either way, most companies don't dig around to this level, they simply lack the resources to do so. It's really not that risky unless they are actively looking to fire her.
