Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
| DW and I are taking a weekend off from the kids and the house and spending a relaxing weekend in the city. Looking for recommendations for a nice place for dinner, not too fancy or upscale, just a nice place with good food and atmosphere to have a special date. Thanks! |
| ooh, very envious, but need more info: where are you staying? any specific types of food you want/dont want? I always think tapas is fun for date night - sangria and finger foods is very romantic (except for the inevitable garlic breath afterward...) and not too expensive, so you might consider jaleo or la tasca around gallery place, but they're both local chains so not very unique. Italian also good for date night but downtown tends to be expensive; if you're up closer to Dupont I'd recommend Dino or Sorriso in Cleveland Park. Anyway, more info and we'll try to help! |
OP here. Thanks for replying. We'll be staying in the dupont area, but willing to drive. Italian would be nice, and it would be great if it's a unique type of place. |
| Go to the new Casa Nonna in Dupont on Connecticut at N. It's where the old California Pizza Kitchen was, but you'd never know it. Upscale but comfortable environment, great Italian food. We love it. |
| I know it has its critics, but I love Tabard Inn for a date night (plus it is right in Dupont). |
PP here - in that case my 2 recs in Cleveland Park stand, and both are right on the metro so no need to drive (or a short cab ride - you'll want to enjoy that bottle of wine). Sorriso is a low key, neighborhoody italian place. It has a wood fired pizza oven (although not a pizza place - true italian menu including pastas and meats) and is on 2 levels of a sort of townhouse bldg, which gives it a warm and cozy feeling, and if you make reservations you can just ask for a cozy table. I wouldn't call the food out of this world, but it's good italian and the ambience is very charming. The owner and his wife are italian, own a vineyard in italy, and are often seen chatting it up with customers. Dino is higher rated food-wise, esp. for their wine list, small plates and charcuterie, and is definitely unique compared to the dark, traditional italian places downtown. Frankly I've found it sort of big and loud the few times I've been but people do love it. Enjoy! |
| Ardeo/Bardeo would be great. Also try Firefly, masa 14, or Cork. |
| I have a plan for you in north Dupont. Go and get a drink (the martinis are the best) at Russia House. Very lush there and romantic--the tables feel very private and there is lots of velvet and flattering lighting. Then walk 1 block down to Bistrot du Coin for very good (but not too spendy or fancy) French food. |

| Go to tiramisu in Dupont. Wonderful Italian and a cozy romantic atmosphere. They also have an amazing wine list....especially their selection of Barolos. |
