Sandy Spring Friends School

DD will be entering the K cohort at SSFS this Fall. I did a group tour/open house and read the limited reviews on here, asked the appropriate questions, etc. We got a great package, prayed about it, and feel like this is the best choice (esp since our local elemen is NOT an option!).

Now that decisions are made, the excitement is finally kicking in (the admissions process was sooo stressful!)

Just want to get some more feedback from current parents ... or even parents of children entering that got more in-depth than we did. What's in store for us as a new SSFS family?!!

Good luck there! My DS really wanted to go there for 6th, but in the end we decided it was just too far away. I still feel we probably made the wrong decision (although free play time for kids is precious, and bus time stressful).

You can expect the other parents to be fairly conservative and mostly SAHMs who live in McMansions. They are very nice but we didn't fit in. Also plan to do a lot of volunteering. I think the early grades are great but we left after 3rd grade.

My son is entering pre-k in the fall. We certainly didn't get the McMansion/conservative vibe there, but we don't have a kid there yet, so I can't say.

For what it is worth, we are hippy liberals in PG county who live in a tiny house and will eat beans and rice to send our kid there.

You sound just like us when our kid went to SSFS! I'm the one who made the comment about McMansions. It might have just been our DD's class that was like that. We ended up leaving PG county because we ran out of options for schools. Still miss the old neighborhood

We'll have to leave PG, too, if SSFS doesn't work out. We really want to stay and tiny house is underwater, so leaving would be a real headache and probably harder financially than scraping together the tuition. But the real reason we are staying is that the school does seem great, and we really would like a Quaker education for our kid. I'm really sorry it didn't work out for you, PP. I hope your DD is doing well and happy where she is.

My 2 DCs attend SSFS and PP 9:31’s experience is not ours at all. I’ve never met a SAHM. All parents are kind of crunchy-granola, liberal, and definitely don’t live in McMansions. It’s as if 9:31 is talking about a different school.
What’s in store for you – a great school with a real sense of community; a great education for your DC; and if you have a problem, it will be addressed in a prompt and professional manner.
We really like the school. Hope you do too. Good luck!

Thanks! She is. It all worked out in the end. Good luck at SSFS!

We thought the school was more in line with Quaker schools we attended in the Philly suburbs, more so than Sidwell. It just ended up being too far for us, although I know a few families whose children attend SSFS and they are interesting, well traveled, and humble.

Thank you all for your input! Bumping in case others who may weigh in missed it on the first go-round.

Does anyone know if SSFS has opening in K for the Fall, my DC would have to take the WPPSI test and interview but because this is the only school that we will look at the requires that test, I do not want to take it without knowing if there openings. I will call the school but I think the K admissions person is on vacation. Thanks.
