| DS is thirteen months old and is not standing (not even with support)! When I try to get him to stand with my support his legs are very wobbly and then he collapses. His development appears to be slow. He is doing an army crawl and is happy to sit. My pediatrician says that he should definitely be standing by now. DS is having physical therapy once a week but he hates it and cries the entire time so nothing gets accomoplished. Has anyone dealth with this? What should I do? I am very worried about my son! Thanks |
| My sister was also very worried about her daughter, who did not crawl until 11 months or stand on her own until 14 months. She just recently began walking at 18 months and seems to be doing fine. Of course, my sister was very worried and tried everything to get her to do it sooner, but I think she just needed to wait until she was ready. It could be that your son is the same way--just needs to do it in his own time. Best of luck! |
| Your pediatrician should be referring you to a specialist for further evaluation. It may be nothing, but it would be better to have your son checked out sooner than later. |

Ask your therapist what he/she thinks the issue is. It may be weak ankles, in which case properly supported shoes could solve his problems.
I know another boy who didn't stand until after 13 months. Literally within a few days of getting better shoes, he was standing and trying to walk. You'll need to go somewhere really good to have him fitted. Check out Shoe Train in Potomac and see Ed. There's usually a sign-up sheet to see him, but he can fit babies for orthotics or other special shoes.' |
Is he chubby? I was a chubby baby (luckily just a phase --and I didn't walk until 2 years old!! Today I probably would have been all kinds of therapy but things just worked themselves out. Curious-did your doctor talk about a lack of muscle tone on legs or other red flags??? I think that if you are concerned, you should just look into this just for your own well being but most likely all is fine

I know someone with two children that did not walk until after 18 months. The children are now just fine. I think that there is always something to worry about. I have a nine month old that refuses to eat food- he only wants milk.

I was told that the size of a baby does not matter, even head size. I had a big baby and she walked right when she turned 9 months. stood alone at 5 months. I was told from the pediatrician, when they baby is ready they will stand, walk, crawl, etc.. |
| that's strange. my son didn't stand until 13 months and no one thought anything of it, including my pediatrician. i think my son was a very efficient crawler. he didn't walk until about 17 months. i've heard of lots of kids who stand/walk late. he's fine. i thought the age at which you start to worry a bit is not walking by 18 months. |
| My DD did not crawl until 10 months and did not walk until 16 months. Your son might be just a little late in his milestones but I would get it checked out more. Sounds like low tone in his legs. It could also be a dislocated hip. My DD had an x-ray to check for this at her 15 month appoitment because the doctor noticed that the creases on the backs of her legs did not line up. That and the fact that she was not walking yet made the pedi think it could be one or two dislocated hips (apparently not an uncommon thing in babies). |
