antibiotic and breastfeeding

Anonymous
I'm taking Z-pack antibiotics and am breastfeeding. My doctor said this antibiotic was fine while breastfeeding. I read that there had not been a lot of research on azithromycin getting into breastmilk and effects on baby though. Has anyone out there taken Z pack while breastfeeding and if so did you notice any adverse effects in your little one? I guess it is sort of too late because I'm already taking it but I thought I'd check with you all anyway.

I did it with each baby. No problems at all.

I also did. Twice over a two year period, while breastfeeding. No problems at all.

It's fine to take, although you do need to watch out for yeast (called thrush when it is on your breast). Antibiotics kill even the good bacteria on your body, thus leaving you very susceptible to yeast overgrowth. If you have any nipple soreness or redness, you will need to treat the thrush both on your nipple and in your baby's mouth. Just something to be aware of.

I have taken the z-pack 3+ times over the last 9 months and nursed the entire time. My DD was fine, no problems and no thrush.

As a little tip, whenever I have been perscribed to take any meds I always call my DD's pediatrician and ask them. Oddly enough a lot of the time my doctor or OB will say something is fine but my DD's Ped says "no". So I always double check.

I actually cross check with my OB and LC. The LC has a manual of some sort that she pulls out whenever moms wonder if a certain prescription will be metabolized into BM and/or have side effect on the baby. I've noticed that GP docs. and dentists are semi clueless about BFing (at least the two that I've seen).

You should be fine though.

Yep, that's what my DD's ped does (or the nurse). They pull out the book and check, they're fantastic. :o)

There's an online database at NIH called LactMed that has all the research on medications and their affect on breastfeeding (both on the infant and on milk supply). I always double check things my GP prescribes there. And yes, Z-packs are fine:

I did and no problems --

We did get thrush, but I don't know that it was related to my antibiotic use as my infant takes a daily antibiotic.
