Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)

Moving from Belgium in July. Entering 5th grade son has raft of learning/memory issues and newly diagnosed ADHD (inattentive) as well as being pretty bright on the side. Does anyone on this forum have a learning challenged student at Chesterbrook? Any advice? Do you know if they have co-taught classes? Resource rooms for reading and writing remediation? Adaptive technologies (audio text books/audio books)? Do they change classes much in the 5th grade? I have been reading some alarming things about FCPS - for having such a great reputation anyway. I know very disabled kids who have gone through the system brilliantly and it is very well regarded but it might suffer at not being able to help bright kids with moderate learning problems...I think it comes down to the school. agreee? disagree? ....but suffice to say I am worried. Is it going to be a full time job navigating the system? How long does it take to get an ILP drafted if I start now? It is really important to me that he be accommodated from the moment he enters the classroom. He has had problems with depression when he does not get the right support. Living in Belgium has been pretty interesting with his issues but at least he is at an intl school where I can talk to one person in charge of LD services and he has just 17 kids in his class.....I think FCPS is going to be a wildly different animal. Oh yeah and I have two other kids as well and a ginormous transatlantic house change in front of me... Thanks in advance |

You might want to post this on the Special Needs forum. You will probably get more responses from people with first hand experience.
I don't know if an ILP is the same as an IEP but the sooner you can get the ball rolling on that, the better. I am not sure what the laws are for an international transfer but I would think that they would have to accept it. As soon as you get here, I would call Chesterbrook and meet with the principal and their head Sp Ed person. GL! |
| I have heard from friends that have had good experiences at Chestebrook. One has an autistic child and the other has a dislexic child. They are both happy with the school. |
