What does "modernization" mean?

Several of the elementary schools in Bethesda/Potomac that we're looking into as we're looking to buy a home mention a modernization plan going on in the next several years. What exactly does this mean they are doing to the school? Are they building an entirely new one (as they did with Carderock Springs) or just adding some new rooms (like they plan to do with Bradley Hills), or something else altogether?

I think it means they are tearing down the existing physical plant and building a new school. Kids are sent to a temporary school during the building phase, which seems to take 12-18 months. They are doing this with Seven Locks ES right now, which is near our house, and did it with Bells Mill ES a couple of years ago. The new facilities are amazing once completed!

I don't think it is always a complete tear down..sometimes it is an addition/update of the exisiting building.

Renovation. Not new school. Bradley Hills. Bethesda Elem. Wyngate I believe.

Potomac got some new schools like bells mills and seven locks. Carderock near the bridge.

Also Garrett Park will be new I think.

Students are not always sent to a holding school--in fact, I think that's the exception rather than the rule. Modernization is a renovation not a rebuild, and like PP said, it's about 12-18 months.

If the school has a lot of portables, that's usually a sign that it's due for modernization. It's not that big of a hassle (been through it twice) and once it's finished, it's wonderful.

One thing--if the modernization plan is still "a few years" away, it might not be happening any time soon, with the budget. There's a lengthy process for determining final plans, which is typical, but I wouldn't count it as a sure thing until an actual construction time frame has been announced. The schools may be "next on the list" but it doesn't mean it's about to happen.

Rock Creek Forest is being "modernized" and it will be a new school, including potential new parking pattern.
