Carrie Dann writes:After an all-night negotiating session, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday that he is “not nearly as optimistic” as he was last night about avoiding a government shutdown before a Friday deadline, saying of a federal funding gap: “it looks like it’s headed in that direction.”
The Democratic leader said that the two sides have essentially agreed on the amount of money set to be cut from the long-term budget but that Republicans have drawn a line in the sand over “ideology” – including policy issues dealing with funding for Planned Parenthood and the Environmental Protection Agency. “Our differences are no longer over the savings we get on government spending, Reid said. “The only thing holding up an agreement is ideology.” here's the full article: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/04/07/64...ed-in-that-direction?GT1=43001 glad my job is now dependent on what somebody thinks about abortion. give me a break. accidentally posted this under 'cluster f*ck' sorry about the double post! |
Abortion is very important to some people. |
I'm failing to understand why it should hold up budget negotiations, though. I absolutely cannot stand when idiots attach this crap to important bills and make it an ideological vote rather than a straight "I agree with this budget or not." |
There are a lot of government workers who live paycheck to paycheck. It will mean a lot to them if they can't make rent. Or miss a mortgage payment. |
its important to some, but not all Americans, they are playing politics at our expnese as usualy. SOBs! |
Important enough to put 800,000 federal workers out of their jobs? Just remember these are real people with families and bills. I am a Fed who is 8 months pregnant. Depending on how long this shutdown lasts, eventually my savings will run out and I won't be able to pay my bills or put food on my table. So, where are the anti-abortion advocates protecting my unborn child???? |
Anti abortion advocates only want to prevent you from aborting your child. They've no interest in helping you care for your child - in fact, most want to abolish welfare and medicaid type programs. |
Policy riders are always attached to budgets because the budget is about how much is spent and where it's spent. This is nothing new. |
no, I know this - it just seems that this one imparticular holds up LOTS of budgets. And it is ridiculous. and honestly, I think it is a red herring. |
The loser of this budget impasse will be whichever high-ranking person makes an inopportune statement first, akin to Gingrich's "waah I had to sit in the back of a plane" comment in 1995. |
As Americans, we all have different issues which we individually think are important. As someone that was raised Catholic I may have different views on certain issues, but I can still be 'pro-choice' and not feel it effects my relationship with god. I don't feel every citizen needs to succomb to my own personal moral views. I certainly don't think somebody's moral or religious views should shutdown the entire government. Guns are important to some and not others. I have childless by choice friends that will never send a child to public school and have argued that they shouldn't pay taxes to support schools which I think is wrong on so many levels. As I have gotten older I have flipped-flopped parties several times...I now realize I really don't like either party. The choices and candidates they throw up every 4 years and the ppl running the majority of congress...I am underwhelmed. |
Yeah, except this isn't the federal government's money. |
Right, but there is quite literally not a fucking chance in Hell that these riders will be put in any legislation that will pass a Democratic senate (or one that has at least 40 Democrats), or be signed into law by the President. By making them non-negotiable, the GOP leadership is essentially setting the government on fire. I think there are a lot of independent voters who don't really understand the ramifications of this shit. And, just like in the Clinton-Gingrich showdown, as soon as things start shutting down, they're going to cut the GOP House a new asshole with a rusty spork. |
