Any decent DCPS pre-K 4 classes (ideally on the Hill) have slots available??

With the furlough pending I'm starting to think more about our finances and perhaps it would be best to put our child SOMEWHERE as long as it's decent. Our nanny could watch him after school. We're definitely planning on putting him in another district next year. Are there any DCPS pre-Ks on the Hill with spots available??

I hate to come off like a jerk - but seriously where have you been for the last month?

The PreK lottery occured at the end of Feb and the charters are right in the middle of lotteries now. Anything desierable will have a waitlist a mile long.

Based on your post you plan on enrolling your child (moving) for K? Why not just do that now.

DCPS has a list of schools with available slot. Check their website. This was as of early March.

I did the lottery. My child was waitlisted at all of the schools that I applied to. I can't move now because a) we recently moved and b) our lease doesn't expire for several more months. Even if we did move, there is no shot in hell we'd get into the pre-K programs in the neighborhoods we are looking at.

The Hill is diverse. It has it's "star" schools, and several "less desirable" ones. I'm familiar with the star schools. And rather than calling up each of the other schools to check on their waitlist movement I thought it'd be more efficient to ask.

Sorry - I read the post as if you had not been part of the process. For example- my SIL last June decided it was time to start figuring out what she was going to do for preSchool in the fall - and was shocked when there was nothing available.

I think Appletree just opened up a new branch in cap hill, near Lincoln Park. Call the school right now to see if there are spaces to enroll or get on the waiting list.

I'd also call Payne and Miner. Get on the waitlists. You will probably get into both schools by summer. There is a 90% probability my DS is going to Payne next year for preschool and we are very happy with the school based on meeting with the Principal and touring the school.

I second the Appletree idea. Their WL moves really fast, so even though they have had lottery, you will very likely get it by Sept.

OP: AWESOME! Thanks so much. This is literally blocks up the street from my house. That is ideal. And the lottery for that location isn't until May (registration enrollment deadline for DCPS). THANKS!

I would not go with Miner, despite all the folks on the Hill trying to convince themselves that it is a decent free option. Yes its free, but still....

It's our inbound school, and I know a neighbor who pulled her DS out of PS3 after a month. Apparently ps3 and pk4 classes are combined (correct me here if I am wrong) and imo there is a lot of difference between a young 3yo and an old 4yo.

Check out Payne - there is an emerging interest by neighborhood families inteh PreK programs there.
