| I heard that DCPS aftcare may be eliminated or limited next year due to budget cuts. I also heard that some parents don't even pay for the aftercare. I'm not sure how they get away with not paying if they are required to do so. Does anyone have more information on this? |
That's not so outrageous. It's probably the equivalent of qualifying for Free and Reduced Price Meals. If their parents are working and their income is below the poverty level, the city has decided it is worthwhile for them to have a safe place to be until a caretaker gets home. I can get on board with that. |
| DCPS aftercare is incredibly disorganized - they have no idea who has paid and who hasn't at my DS's school. You also have to pay by money order which is a huge pain. |
|
My east of the park school asked us for income information, but has never sent a bill. The school is 80% low income so maybe it's not worth the staff time to collect? We would gladly pay if asked.
A couple months ago, our aftercare coordinator told me that preschool/preK aftercare in particular might be cut because the staff/child ratio has to be much lower (something like 12:1 vs. 25:1). If that happens I have no idea how we will deal with it. Could probably use our old in-home daycare, but I don't know how we would get our child there at 3:15. |

My NW school never asked for a payment BUT I knew what I owed so I paid. The contract I signed allowing my child to attend indicated how much was owed on a monthly basis and it even indicated when it should be paid. My school is about 92% FARM.
FYI-Not getting a bill doesn't mean that you DON'T owe the money. Especially if you used the service. |
| Wow, so people aren't paying because they didn't get a bill. Now I will not be surprised if they cut the program if no income is coming in. |
| It's a shame that people are not paying for aftercare which may result in others losing the opportunity to have aftercare due to budget cuts. Hopefully, outside aftercare will become the norm because at least they will keep track of who is paying! |
You really need to go pay. I hope they send you the bill for the entire year at the end of the year. |
Where did you hear this? |
| Send me a bill and I'll pay it. Otherwise, WTF? |
| I might be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the schools that are not billing for aftercare are not doing so because they are Title 1 and are getting funds that are allocated to Title 1 schools to provide this as a service. I wouldn't suggest that people just go to their schools and drop off a check for aftercare, as many Title 1 schools might not have a way to process this money. If I am wrong, I am sure someone will point it out here, but I thin that is the deal. |
This makes no sense to me. Isn't it a school-by-school issue?? JED, Wonders at Mann, Murch Extended Day, etc. -- isn't it up to the schools?? |
If they sent me a bill, I WOULD PAY IT. Jebus Cripes, is this so hard. Look, how much should I send? Some random amount between $100 and $10000? |
I am sure they are happy to keep taking your check but since they have never asked for payment did you ever once stop and think that maybe some policy may have changed after you signed the contract and they didn't tell you. This is the DC public school system afterall so I wouldn't count on them to be super organized. I don't think anyone should just start randomly paying. If they bill at the end of the year for the whole year, well, then they do. so what? |
| If it's DCPS aftercare for all, and you aren't a FARM, it's $5 a day. Payable in a money order only. |
