Registering a car in MD

Anonymous
We are planning on registering our vehicles in MD and wanted to clarify the rules and cost. Do I have to pay taxes on the car I already own? Both of our cars are old and paid off (1997 & 2005). We would like to get new cars, but I don't want to give up my 2005 toyota even though the trade in value is really good. Is the registration process easy?

Yes, you will pay taxes on the car you already own- at least that's what happened to us!
Quite the shock, I have to tell you.

Registration is a huge PIA, as the DMV operates similar to any other government agency....morons at the helm! They are all angry clerks, really pissed all the time! especially the Gaithersburg location. I feel for you.
The paperwork you need to bring in is never-ending as well. Go in over-prepared. bring everything but your children's birth certificates with you. Not kidding....

All of this information is available at the MVA website, you know that, right?

same thing in any state, you have to pay taxes in the state you register in. It is one of the things to consider when changing states.

op here: yes but I was hoping I was reading it wrong. Now we're trying to decide if we should just keep the old car or just get a new car. Why pay the taxes twice?
