School Within School at Peabody

Anonymous
New to the Capitol Hill area and wanted to get some opinions on the School Within School at Peabody. My DS is 4 and just got accepted. This would allow him to then get to Watkins for elementary. Any feedback to ease my tensions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!!

My children were lucky enough to get to attend the school. The teachers are warm, engaging, creative and thoughtful. There is a lot of parental involvement demanded and you will feel as though you are part of a wonderful, caring community.

You might want to read up on Reggio Emilia. It is the philosophy upon which the school is based. The program has a reputation of not being academic (although it has gotten more academic as the district has forced more testing on the school), but it lays a good academic framework.

Where do most SWS kids go for first grade? Watkins? Heard the regular (i.e., non-montessori) program is just meh and perhaps worse in the upper grades. Do some families plan to switch to the new Logan Montessori for first?

Logan Montessori is leaving the Cluster, so the only way to transfer in would be through lottery. And I believe Montessori only allows entrance in the first, and maybe second year.

You are extremely luck to have a spot in SWS - there is no other school like it.

You will hear mixed things about Watkins. I think a lot of people get put off by the building and the chaos in the morning. I chose it for my child based on going in and sitting in the classrooms. There was a lot to like there. I think bright children do well there and as a big school the school has a lot to offer (science, library, PE, music, etc.). They just built a gorgeous field behind the school. It is not the right school for every child and every parent, but check it out. You might end up liking it.

I would definitely do SWS for my kid if I were you. Watkins is just OK - you may want to look around come 1st grade, but I think 85% of Peabody kids go to Watkins at least for 1st grade.

Loved SWS, had a good experience with teachers at Watkins, too.

SWS is fine. Watkins is awful. True most of the Peabody SWS kids go to Watkins for grade 1, but very few stick around past 2nd grade. Watkins has a long way to go.

I've heard great things about the Montessori program at Watkins...is it that certain programs thrive and others don't. Can you be more specific?

Does anyone know anything about exmissions from the Montessori program?

Thanks!

The Montessori at Watkins is no more-effective next school year. They are getting their own school near union station. Montessori at Logan. So if you go to Watkins next year, it will be for the traditional elementary school program.

I would love for DC to go to SWS (we are in the Cluster zone and I hear it is much easier to get into SWS if you are) but have no idea what we'd do afterwards. I don't like Watkins and most private schools don't admit many students for first grade, when SWS ends. Have also not heard great things about other CH public schools post-K. Would like to hear what other SWS families have done for first grade and beyond.

There are other great DCPS schools on the Hill - Maury and Brent in particular, but both would be serious longshots for the first grade. My DS is at Brent and we love the school - it has a really strong community, excellent teachers and a beautiful facility.

One Peabody family I know moved their son to EL Haynes in 1st - the rest are at Watkins.

There are a LOT of Hill families at Two Rivers, and I've heard there's actually a bus from the Hill to Yu Ying.
