Spanish immersion in Fairfax (and/or at Laurel Ridge Elementary in Fairfax)?

Anonymous
Greetings.

I was wondering if anyone had good or bad experiences in the Spanish immersion at Laurel Ridge and if so, what were they? Or you might have had some good/bad experiences at another school. If so, can you share?

Also, I have been hearing some criticism about the program, including the question: why don't immersion program teachers have their own children in the immersion program? Apparently, no Spanish immersion teacher has their own child in the program. I have no idea if this is true and if I gave the program the benefit of a doubt, I might guess that it's because the teachers aren't allowed to enroll their own kids (conflict of interest). But I am not sure so this is why I'm posting.

Thank you!

Can't find my kids yearbook but I've got two in the laurel ridge immersion program and am pretty sure no immersion teacher has an elementary school aged kid. Many of the non immersion teachers have children who attend the school.

Yeah, I just don't get statements like 9:54. What is "a lot?" And how would anyone know what percentage of FCPS teachers even have children, let alone send their children to private schools?

I suppose an insider - like a teacher - might have some anectdotal evidence from the one or few schools she has taught in. But there are well over 100 schools in FCPS - it would be unlikely someone would know this information.

In my children's elementary school, I know three teachers from Kindergarten to 3rd grade who have children who are school age. All three of them send their children to the FCPS that they teach in (one is inside the boundaries; the other two are not). A fourth teacher I know who has grown children sent her kids to FCPS (the ones they were in-bounds for, I believe). I have a friend of a friend who teaches in FCPS, and she sends her children to FCPS (the ones they are in boundary for, not the one she teaches in).

Isn't spanish immersion for non-bilingual kids? Wouldn't it be likely that children of spanish immersion teachers would be bilingual? Could be an explanation.

Thank you for all responding. I appreciate it. For some of you who have kids in the immersion program, are you happy with it? Do you have any complaints? Is taking the SOLs in English for content areas like math a problem for kids learning math in Spanish? Are your kids picking up the language (I hear it takes some time before they start speaking it, which is fine!). Are the teachers good? Thanks for all your time.

Half the kids speak English at home and half of them speak Spanish
