I know someone who is having a VBAC... and wants to do it at home with a midwife.
Uh, am I alone in thinking that this might be a bad idea? |
|
My friend had a home birth (unplanned and without a midwife) after two c-sections.
After watching "The Business of Being Born" I would do it. |
| I wouldn't do it, I am attempting a VBAC this time but definitely in a hospital. I don't think I am the type to attempt a home birth pstood though. |
| CRAZY BAD IDEAS. i had a vbac in a hospital and had a near-death experience after delivery. My blood pressure dropped and they thought i had ruptured my uterus in delivery. I needed THREE sonograms to confirm that all was well. |

OP here, re: The Business of Being Born - I guess Rikki Lake disagrees with me. But I'd take childbirth in a US hospital over anywhere else in the world. And yes I know about our infant mortality rate - it has much to do with the disparity of medical care and education in minority communities. It also includes SIDS statistics from those same groups, which are high.
I don't think it's a reflection on a typical, reputable US hospital. |
| Not a chance. My previous incision started to open during labor. If this had been a home birth I might have died and my baby definitely would have died. I love modern medicine. |
| No way. I had a VBAC with a nurse midwife in a birthing center. The birthing center was connected to a hospital in case of emergency. |
| You never get everything in life. If a VBAC is important, than she should be responsible about handling the risks, for herself, the baby, and her existing family. Listen to the posters who faced real medical problems during their VBAC. You can't know going in if that will or won't be you. |
| No, and I would have a home birth (non-VBAC), to give you perspective. An acquaintance just had attempted a VBAC at the hospital and had a uterine and bladder rupture. She is ok, but these things do happen. Too risky. |
You probably would not have made it there in time if something went wrong. VBAC w/ uterine rupture means death of mom and baby. |
| My bf had a rupture and almost died. |

I had an HBAC. I was very well read up on the subject and the pros and cons of vaginal vs repeat section, home versus hospital. I had 2 well trained and experienced midwives. I was 10 minutes from the hospital in case I needed to do a transfer. To me the risks of a c-section complications were greater than an HBAC complications.
Uterine ruptures don't just happen without warning. There are signs the midwives are trained to look for. The midwife went over those with me and our plan if I started experiencing any of the signs. I wouldn't change it for anything. |
| VBAC with uterine rupture doesn't automatically mean death for mother and baby. |
|
No way.
Although I might be as comfortable in a Belgian hospital as a US hospital giving birth. Every mom has a doula-like person working with them during the birth. |
| I had what I would consider the best of both worlds...VBAC in a hospital. I was able to have a wonderful birth experience knowing that a surgical room and medical intervention was right there. |
