MD residents in DCPS

How widespread is this, which schools, and does DCPS central office care?

By observation looking at car tags--I notice a lot of Maryland plates in Capitol Hill schools and have overheard MD parents discussing the lottery/Capitol Hill schools/charters at other child activities that my DS attends, for example music/sports.

This happens in both D.C. and Maryland. MCPS has pupil personnel workers that will drive to student houses and check on residency. I suspect this is a difficult area to monitor as parents use different relative's addresses in each jurisdiction. I know MCPS will investigate if it is reported.

I have to say that I often see cars with MD plates picking up students at my DD's school-- BUT I see kids whose families I know, and whose (DC) homes I have visited getting into those cars. A lot of babysitters/nannies working for DC families live in MD. I think this explains at least a good number of MD plates at our JKLMOs.

Yes! I drive by Langdon on my way to and from work and, even accounting for grandparents or 1 parent living in the city, 1 not, etc. etc. there's just no way all those MD plates can be explained. It's wall-to-wall MD plates. Agree w/ Maury and Peabody too (live on the Hill so I see that as well). Don't see it as much at Brent and Watkins. Now I do know that, as a PP stated, I have been at the home of a classmate of my kid in the city and then seen them later with MD plates. Maybe it's cheaper if you register your car at your relative's house in the 'burbs?

Some of them may be the cars of teachers and other employees too.

Yes, quite a few students that attend Langdon live in MD (many use a relatives address -which is easily done). What did DCPS do? Nothing.

Yes, some teachers live in MD, but most park on the parking lot. But hey, there is a teacher who lives in MD whose child also attends this school. Believe me, the teacher doesn't pay tuition. But again, nothing is done. Hey, it's about keeping numbers up at some schools.

Maybe, but I see the kids being dropped off with MD tags. Could be grandparent/relatives.

Same story at Yu Ying. There are plenty of MD tags, but they are all nannies and babysitters.

It seems to me that something needs to be done to give schools themselves an incentive to report non-DC residents. If a kid is outed & expelled, the school shouldn't lose all of the $ allocated for that child--maybe just lose a small portion for the remainder of the year.

another option is for the school district to give the family a bill for tuition. there is a stated rate for non-resident tuition.
you can also sue and it would probably be a felony as the value of the item stolen (1 year tuition) is around $9K - $12K depending on the grade.

Until the district is willing to step up to the plate and prosecute people - this is going to continue to be a problem.

We live in DC, and rent out our house in MD. Our car still has MD tags. Don't make too many assumptions about people's situations.
