Marvin?

How's Marvin for food and ambiance? Is it romantic, low-key? If not, is there someplace in the 14th and U Street that is? thanks

I am not exactly sure what you are looking for in a restaurant, but Marvin is one of my husband and I's favorite date night places. It can be a bit loud and cramped, but the food is excellent, they have good wines by the glass and inventive cocktails, the rooftop bar is a fun place to have a drink before or after dinner (they have heat hamps when it's cold!), and I generally really like the vibe. If you are okay with a loud, slightly young atomosphere, go for it!

Other good options in that area are Cork (at 14th and R), Estadio (14th and Q - HARD to get a reservation, but amazing), Birch and Barley (14th and Rhode Island), 1905 (at 9th and T) - although better for drinks than food, Vinoteca (at 11th and U) - more of a wine bar vibe, or Creme (at 13th and U).

PP again - just re-read my post and may have given you the wrong impression. Although the restaurant can be loud, I would definitely describe it as "romantic" and "low-key" - cozy tables, attractive lighting, comfortable environment, comfort food, etc.

love it. great food. great ambiance. but LOUD.

i guess it depends on when you go. my and my husband had to leave right after the meal because we couldn't hear each other.

We've only been there for brunch, but I though the food was mediocre - I really don't understand why anyone would go there for the food.

I really like it for dinner (haven't been for brunch) but it really is LOUD. i know this makes me sound 80 but I'm closer to 30 I wouldn't go with a big group because you can't hear everyone but it should be good for 2. And I think it's a good date night place.

Bistro La Bonne on 14th St. is excellent.

We had an awful experience there. Horrific service (and I am someone who doesn't usually care and tips over 20% even for just ok service) that is almost overtly bored and hostile. Mediocre food cannot compensate for the awful service. Cramped space. SO many better places to go!!
