I will be moving to Howard County next school year. My son will be entering 6th grade. He has asperger's/high functioning autism. His IQ is average and he is a A/B student with alot of support. He has a 1:1 aide and he is in self-contained small classes (4 kids in math, 9 kids in writing and reading and science/social studies). He also gets speech/OT services. I am coming from a public school in NJ where he has received excellent services. I have read about several asperger programs in md public schools but they all seem to be inclusion classes with large class size and some support. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated! |
I don't know about Howard County personally, although I've heard through friends that it has an excellent public school program for kids on the spectrum. I'll call a couple of them tonight to see if I can get more info, but in the mean time, there may be some helpful information on this site, including contacts. My son is very low-functioning, so his IEP would be completely different than what you are looking for (plus he's in a different county).
Good luck with everything. http://www.howard-autism.org/ |
OH, and if you haven't already, you might want to post in the special needs forum. You might get more feedback there. |
I thought they had full inclusion? I knew someone at Folly Quarter MS who claimed that her kids - b/c of inclusion - never questioned the behavior of any child diagnosed with a "condition" (and I use that term loosely).

I just came upon this post and am curious because I have an aspie in 6th grade in a howard county middle school. How has 6th grade been going for your son? Have you been pleased with the level of support you have received? |
