Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| I have been so surprised at how many stores carry only toys made in China. I have been to chain stores mainly, but I did go to a brick and morter - The Right Start, which I would consider upscale and that was all they had for 0-6 months. I have a 4 month old son and he is my first, so this is all new to me. I would like to know if anyone knows of any stores that have toys in particular that are made in other countries. It would be nice to see some things made in America, what a novel idea. Thanks for any advice! |
| Kinderhaus in Clarendon (Arlington), on N. Fillmore Street. Lots of toys made in Europe and USA. It is more expensive though. |
| Tugooh Toys in Georgetown and now on Bethesda Row sells wonderful toys and they research each toy company to ensure the store is selling safe toys. |
| We like Sullivan's in Cleveland Park on Wisconsin near the Cathedral. There is another new toy store right in downtown Bethesda--Tugooh Toys and Yiro Clothing. I haven't been but I think they will have what you're looking. As for toy brands, we love Haba toys. They're wood or cloth and made in Germany. Our daughter loves them. But you may find that your best bet is the web. |

You can find the toys, even on line, you just need to know the brands to look for -- Haba, Bruder (trucks and vehicles), Clics (similar to Lego's), Playmobil and I am sure many others.
Here are some links to websites and articles on toys not made in china: http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/500-not-made-in-china-50110507 http://www.nmctoys.com/ http://www.oompa.com/cgi-bin/category/0 http://www.chinafreechristmas.info/ |
| I second Kinder Haus! I also found a small selection of organic cotton Under the Nile teething toys for my 5-mo at Whole Foods. Also, I understand that Ikea's toys are made to European standards (stricter than US) - a lot of them are for older kids, but I plan on picking up the knit finger puppets when DS is a little older... |

I'm also a fan of Haba toys.
also onestepahead.com sells only toys they've tested for lead themselves. they sell a lot of Haba. |
| Doodlehopper 4 Kids in Falls Church carries the previously-recommended Haba toys (and other great brands too, like Kathy Kruse, Taggies and Lamaze). |

I looked at the Haba toys at Kinderhaus and although they are a German company, the toys were made in China. I don't think the salespeople have good suggestions for age-appropriate toys either.
Surprisingly, we went to Ikea last weekend and they had lots of wooden toys made in Bulgaria (and they were way cheaper than those botique toy stores too). |
| We shop at the Doddlehopper 4 Kids in Springfield (off of Huntsman Blvd). It is great to find a nice non-chain toy store in the 'burbs. |

I found this great online store that sells natural toys. It sells wooden and eco-friendly toys made in Germany, USA, Thailand and from companies that follow strick safety standards. Prices as reasonable given the quality. ChildTrek.com is my new online favorite!
