Food, Cooking, and Restaurants
We just moved to Cameron Station in the Landmark/Van Dorn area of Alexandria and I'm trying to find some staple restaurants. Of course Old Town has some great options, but if we want to stay closer to home it would be great to know of some good places right nearby. There seem to be a TON of places, it's just separating awesome little hole in the wall places from just downright crappy places. Any recs? I would especially love to know if anyone has any leads on a good bagel place

I've lived in this area for 8 years. We order from Sala Thai (Van Dorn) all the time. They are super friendly and quick. Not as fabulous as eating at Duangrats but good and decent prices. Ate at Fratelli's once next door and it was so empty so we got great service and the food wasn't bad. Don't eat at Mango Mikes but the drinks are good. Shooter McGees is a local bar crowd with a small restaurant on half. Los Toltecos' is decent mexican food and crowded at happy hour. Heard good things about the Japanese place by the Teeter but have never been. VALENTINO's is the best NY style pizza around.. on the other side of 396 by the Total Wine. They deliver too.
There is a mediteranean grocery store in the Home Depot plaza that is a great find for tahini and the like. Shirlington is such a quick ride we go there a lot. I haven't had a decent bagel outside of NJ

I second Duangrats and Los Toltecos.
Fuddruckers - they have a little arcade area if you older kids
Head down to little Korea for some other great options
Thanks so much for all of the suggestions, especially to 20:01! We actually are moving from NJ hence my desire for bagels. I have found that the Manhattan Bagel in Ballston is really good, it's just a hike!
