S/O did you do silicone or saline implants?

Anonymous
I too am considering implants, but I'm leanind towards saline. I understand that silicone give much better results, but I just cannot get over the fact that you have to go in for MRIs every few years. That seems like a lot of precaution for boobs.

What material did you choose? If silicone, how did you reconcile that you have to have regular MRIs to check for leaks? Also if one does rupture, how do you reconcile the fact that the silicone can be quite dangerous inside your body? Or as you just hoping for the best?

For saline women, are you happy with your breasts? Do you wish you had gone for the more realistic feeling and looking silicone?

I have silicone cohesive gel. No need for the MRIs.

Did you get yours outside of the US or are you a cancer survivor? The "true" gummy bear implants that are truly cohesive are the Type II and Type III and are not FDA approved. The "cohesive" ones allowed in the US are Type I and are really nothing more than marketing of cohesive implants, the too can leak and all the docs I visited said MRIs were reccomended.

I believe the type II and III (the true cohesive implants) are allowed in reconstructive surgery, such as breast cancer survivors, but are restricted for standard vanity implants.

I have silicone gel implants. I'm not a cancer survivor, but I did agree to be in the silicone study. I do not have to go in for MRIs every few years and have never heard that recommendation before. I have heard that once you reach the age of needing mammograms, that you may want to do MRIs as well in order to get clearer visuals, but I am not there yet.

I would never have gotten saline, they just did not feel good to me, so for me it was silicone or nothing. I love my implants, ten years later have had no problems with them- they are still soft, no capsular contracture and had totally normal breast changes during pregnancy. FWIW I've found that a lot of doctors, especially non plastic surgeons, talk about the "dangers" of silicone implants, but have no clue about the most recent research and recommendations. There is definitely a left-over stigmas from the early days, but the technology has come along way since then.

ALL plastic surgeons reccomend that now. From the Mayo clinic: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/breast-implants/WO00052
From the FDA: http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/ProductsandMedicalProcedures/ImplantsandProsthetics/BreastImplants/UCM064397

**Silicone is not 100% safe. Sicone probably won't kill you, except in very very rare occasions where it migrates to the heart or lungs.

As someone who is still considering silicone, EVERY doctor I spoke to said that MRIs are a must and one doc said that approx 25% are ruptured, but the patient only finds out through an MRI. The leak is often slow and because of the nature of silicone, it does not deflate like saline, so people walk around with ruptures for years.

The saline feels very natural. Mine were inserted under the muscle and I have some fat on top (my natural breats) to give them a very natural feel. I imagine if you were very skinny and put them above the muscle, they might feel like bags of water, but when they are surrounded by sufficient natural "stuff" (for lack of a better word), they are great. I didnt want to take a chance with silicone.

All I see are two posts on this topic. I'm the OP of this thread and not the other one (hence SPIN OFF-get it?)

If you don't like it then ask Jeff to become moderator and erase the postings.
