Finding the sweet spot between lower Arlington & Herndon

Anonymous
My family and I are almost at a point of moving to the Northern VA area. One of us has teaching opportunities in lower Arlington while the other has job opportunities in Reston/Herndon. While we have fallen in love with the Sunrise Valley/McNair area in Herndon, we're afraid that the commute from Herndon to Glebe Road will soon drain us.

What is a good area that will give both of us somewhat equidistant travel with schools commensurate to the ones in Reston/Herndon?

check 22204 - Alcova Heights in particular

I should have clarified. We would like to keep the kids in Fairfax County Schools for now. Kinda looking at the Oakton area as a possibility, but we're not sure.

South Arlington.

Vienna/Oakton is a good in between choice.

And better schools than in Reston/Herndon, too.

So a PITA commute for both OP and spouse, with lousy schools to boot?

Also will help if you let us know what your budget is and what you're looking for in terms of lot size/condition.

If you want new construction, 3000+ sf, etc., for $500k or less, welcome to Ashburn or Leesburg, no choices. If you're ok with a townhouse on that budget, then Falls Church City opens up.

you could also look at the older parts of McLean -- along Kirby Road or Vienna near Wolf Trap.

Maybe something around West Falls Church in the Marshall HS area? That's kind of halfway between. McLean would be great, but it's pretty pricey. Vienna/Oakton would be good too. Herndon is close enough to Vienna/Oakton, and the commute to Arlington from there is not horrible.
