Kids With Special Needs and Disabilities
We are nearing the end of a good school year, and the school changed our dc's one:one aide without any notice. She just appeared at dismissal, and said she would be the new aide. Has anyone had this happen before? No notice to parents, no preparation for the child. I have not approached the school about my concerns, so any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
The old aide may have quit without notice to them. Perhaps they had no choice. Did you ask? It's happened in my daughter's classroom.
Happened to us and the new aide assaulted my child. I would call an emergency meeting.
Happened to us as well. Notifying you in advance would have been the right thing to do but the school isn't required to provide prior notice of this unless it's specified in the IEP.
How much lag time was between the old aide leaving and the new one showing up? I work in an ES and we had 2-3 aides leave when they got sub jobs (they pay much more) but it took a good few weeks to replace them. It takes a few days for the temp services office to send the principal new names of aides and then she/he has to contact them, set up interviews, etc. If they are hired, they have to be fingerprinted if they haven't been already and then they have to wait at least a few more days for the background check, etc. What I am saying is that if the old aide left and they had to hire a brand new one (as opposed to using one currently at the school), they have plenty of time to let you know about it.
OP here--Old aide did not quit, was reassigned within school--I guess...she's still there.
If she didn't quit I would think they should have notified you so you could at least prepare your child for the transition and touch base with the new aide in advance. Can you set up a meeting with the aide t make sure you are on the same page about her/his role with your child. I know some can be too enabling while others truly understand their function.
