My DH is in a relatively senior position at a good-sized company. His salary is in the $250-300K range. He is smart, has good experience and worked his ass off to get where he is. The thing is--and I would never say this to him--his current job is a joke. He gets into the office around 9:30, has coffee and reads the paper before starting work. Every day he goes to lunch or the gym and very often both, and still leaves the office no later than 5:30. He often pays bills or takes care of personal stuff during the day or even goes out and runs errands. He does sometimes have to travel but not that often. Obviously he's always accessible by blackberry and sometimes he has to take calls at odd times, but thats pretty rare.
I on the other hand make about 1/3 of what he makes, and my workdays are absolutely packed. I'm at my desk by 8:30, never take lunch, and am hustling to get out by 6. I like my job so I'm not complaining, but the differences are kind of staggering. I'm very happy for DH to have a position like this, we live very comfortably and he definitely uses his extra time and flexibility to benefit me and our kids. But I'm wondering if maybe he is slacking off in some important way that we can't see right now. His boss is in another office out in the burbs so she never sees him, and the boss seems to keep a similar schedule anyway. By all accounts the boss is very happy with DH's performance. But to me it just seems absolutely batshit crazy to be making that much money for this much work. Is it possible that a job like this exists?? Is this some secret that corporate honchos are privy to and they're laughing at us from their fancy offices while they look busy but really they're really just playing angry birds???? |
| I have never posted tbis on DCUM before (although I think it often), but is this post a joke?? |
| You just described the day in the life of every executive at my company. Delegate down is what they do. Nice gig, yes? |

That's capitalism for you, baby. Just go with it. I'm a teacher and make a fraction of what he does. I bust my ass daily. Get in at 8, usually stay until 6 (the night time janitors know me), and just now finished the work I had to do for tomorrow. My carpal tunnel syndrome is killing me. My work habits are not uncommon among my colleagues, and now they're talking about union busting and taking away our collective bargaining rights.
Be happy that your DH has it easy. You're living off the fruits of his sloth. |
| Is he in government or work for a government contractor? I used to work for an org where the employees were grossly overpaid (not as much as your DH though). They got paid for showing up by 9am and going home by 5pm. In between, most days they chatted with co-workers for an hour to an hour and a half about personal matters, surfed the internet, chatted on the phone with friends and family, went for half and hour to an hour and a half plus lunches (my boss occasionally snuck out for six hour lunches and did not come back if he didn't think he would get caught that day), went to exercise classes, ran personal errands, went to lunch for two or three hours and talked about how they were underpaid. And you wonder why some governments are broke. |
| oops, meant "went to lunch meetings for two or three hours" |
She said DH makes $250-300K. High level govt workers make half that. So no, I don't think he works for the govt. |
| Wow. My husband is a partner at a law firm and practices corporate law. He makes that same amount of money and works his a$$ off. I am green with envy. |

I hope you are socking away the savings. His current management might not care, but sooner or later, the board or the head office or whoever is going to call for a review, and he might be vulnerable.
Another thought: is he happy with this? Wouldn't he rather be productive and innovation and an example to his team? I have a job like his (paid much, much less of course) and I hate it. I wish my boss would allow me some more responsibility, but he's a crazy micromanager, so I can only do as much work as he can review. Anything else is ignored. I would be MUCH happier with fuller days. |
| My DH used to have that job. I think it happens a lot in privately held companies that are very successful and don't have to answer to a Board for their expenses. Things change if the company goes public. |
She said he works at "a good-sized company." |
No, they're living off the fruits of his brain power and previous hard work. I'm an educator, too. We could have gone into business but chose to enter a field that's more like missionary work. There's a place for both. |
| My DH too. Although his base is closer to 200K. He has a new boss and as a result his projects have changed. The guy seems to like him, he got a great raise and bonus but he's in at 9:30 and out by 5:30 each day and I know he is not that busy. |
| OP has just described every senior man in my nonprofit. There are no senior women, our male ED demoted the only one we had. |

Yes, it is quite common. |
