etiquette re moving crew

Anonymous
We're getting ready to move (about 10 miles from where we are now) at the end of the month. We have moved a bunch of times before, but never formally hired a moving company to do it, so this will be our first time. Do we tip the moving crew? How much? And since the move will likely take at least 5 hours, when does the crew eat? Do we provide food or do they take a break or what? TIA for any advice!

I think we tipped $40/piece. They took their own breaks for meals, we had water available for them.

We tipped $40/each guy, provided drinks and bought them lunch.

Thanks for giving me an idea on what to expect, PPs.

what? we have to tip movers now????????

We also tipped $40/guy. And we had a big cooler of Gatorade for them. It was two really hot days and we have a fair amount of stuff and a lot of stairs.

It irritated me to tip the guys but I think ended up tipping $20 each and having drinks out for them. I was already paying out the wazoo for my local move and didn't think I needed to spend another $200 or so on top of it tipping the guys but...I'm probably cheap.

We tipped them $50 each and provided lunch and drinks. I think our move took about 6-7 hours. Do you really want them taking the truck full of your stuff to a McDonald's or something?

OP here. Thanks for all the responses. How did you all figure out how much to tip? Was it a percentage of the total? I was thinking of $40-$50/person, but then I got to thinking maybe it depends on how much the total comes out to. As for the lunch breaks, did you work that out w/ the company ahead of time? I have no clue how this should work.

One time, the crew took a lunch break and told us they got lost. No tip for them!

They're making big bucks. I give them water/soda and that's it.

Me too
After all, the company and I have an agreement as to what the actual cost is going to be

I tip if I'm given good service, but what's up with the food and drink? Is this a woman thing?
