For those who might be considering one of the top schools in the District (Lowell)

I just wanted to say welcome. It is a loving community. We have been there six years. Our children have the same FSIQs as the kids going to top 3s (and know many of them). And we appreciate the many ways in which are children will grow to be good citizens and community members as well as their creativity and inquiring minds. The new Head of the school has done a terrific job of pulling in new teachers and staff as well as keeping the core values and teachers intact. And the curriculum she has designed is very impressive and interesting and 21st century, etc.

So I just wanted to welcome you ...

P.S. I've defended Lowell before but this is really classless, playing into the best school nonsense. Lowell wishes.

Lowell is a wonderful school. No need for snark. Different schools fit different kids. I'm amazed at the vitriolic responses of insecure moms on this board. Be content with your lives and decisions.

Those are truly horrible, rude responses to a perfectly friendly message. I am interested learning more about Lowell and appreciate the op's post, but the tone of the responses have convinced me DCUM is not the place to get good school info.

This forum can be a very harsh place. The post had a friendly, genuine feel to it. At the same time, it probably would have been better to omit the comment about the Full Scale IQ Scores.

Perhaps it's because the OP has absolutely no useful content. Nothing about the math curriculum, or interesting social studies, or great hands-on science, or fantastic specials. Just something vague about how "we are a top school" and "our children have very high FSIQ's". I mean, did this make YOU want to find out more about the school, or to steer clear? Honestly?

Not worth 30K. Sounds wonderful, though.

I am the OP and I think my point was mostly that Lowell treasures respectful communication which is something this board would benefit from greatly. My point about FSIQs was tongue in cheeck, folks, seriously -- y'all took it all so seriously -- I was amazed that folks were posting admission numbers with their children's IQ scores ... I think many of the other schools are wonderful too and many children from Lowell will attend those same schools. Many of them have wonderful history and traditions as well -- GDS as the leader for racial integrity in the city, Sidwell with its philosophy, Sheridan, Green Acres -- but for the right families looking to raise their children in an excellent combination of community and academics, the fit may be right -- also if you are starting out it is hard for you to know yet how and where your child will thrive really -- but so sad to feel you must attack ... and I would not want those making the choice to come to Lowell to feel saddened ...

OP,
If it was tongue in check, give a sign.
It came off as silly cheerleading, reads like PR, I bet it would make the entire board blush, especially considering it comes on the heels of that crazy thread by the OP who was questioning Lowell's tuition.
Ever hear of an emoticon ?

Do children at Lowell call their teachers by their first name? Just curious....

Yes, they do. Having come from a formal educational system myself, I was suspicious of the practice at first. But now I have no problem with it whatsoever. The kids are taught to be respectful of everybody even as they are taught to be confident critical thinkers who advocate for themselves. My DC is comfortable with adults and is skilled at reading different registers and situations. They can use Sir and Mr. in other contexts easily.

I know this is more than you wanted to know, but in a sense it's a response to some of the concerns about this issue I saw on other threads.

I don't see why OP didn't simply title the post "for those considering lowell". Seems like she didn't "just" want to welcome people...
