DC Public and Public Charter Schools
So DD got into Tubman. We like the school, and were wondering if any other DCUM'ers were considering the school for next year?
I'm not b/c my kid are already in a charter and I'm not planning to move them. But, I certainly would not dismiss Tubman, especially for PS/PK. I know someone who is there, she like the teachers but wishes there was more parental involvement. I hope other parents do respond to you.
I have a 4 year old at the Columbia Heights Appletree. We were encouraged to consider Tubman. Several people at Appletree have a lot of confidence in their administration. I have had a very positive experience at Appletree and did put it down as one of my picks. We have a low waitlist number also. I have also worked with members of their PTA on some after school issues several years back and was impressed at their parent support and organization. That is not a small achievement considering they like many schools have many poor parents working multiple jobs/odd hours ect. That said don't go in assuming everything will be great, their test scores leave a lot to be desired so obviously the focus will be on pulling kids up rather than addressing kids with strong skills already.
PP, thanks for your assessment. Their scores look better than other schools (Cooke, Marie Reed, etc.) so at least they're starting from a higher base. I very much respect the principal and hope he's there next year. It is a lovely school (on the inside, anyway), and I love their soccer field.
I don't know anything about the education at Tubman, but I have been to a few ANC meetings there. I found the facilities to be absolutely disgusting, especially, and unfortunately, the girl's bathroom. It was disgusting. If that was my only option, I would become very involved and even be *that person* who checks out the bathrooms to make sure they are consistently clean. Kids don't have a choice and it's just not right. I have no other reason to criticize Tubman, I know nothing about the academics but I will always be flabbergasted by the state of the bathrooms there.
